Carleton rallies to topple Augsburg 81-76 at Si Melby Hall

MINNEAPOLIS (1/17/00) -- Mike Binder (Sr., West. St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) led all scorers with 23 points and eight rebounds Monday, guiding the Carleton College men's basketball team to an 81-76 upset win over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Si Melby Hall.

Carleton improves to 4-8 overall and 1-7 in the MIAC with the victory, while Augsburg drops to 8-4 overall and 7-2 in the league. Carleton broke a six-game losing streak, over three seasons, to the Auggies with Monday's win.

With St. Thomas' win over St. John's on Monday, the Tommies (11-3 overall) move into first place in the league standings with an 8-2 record, a half-game ahead of Augsburg and St. John's (11-2 overall) in the MIAC standings. St. Thomas is off on Wednesday, having completed the first half of the MIAC's double round-robin schedule.

Carleton rallied from a nine-point first-half deficit (36-27 with 4:28 remaining in the half) to trail 40-34 at halftime. The Knights then went on a 12-2 run to take a lead they would not relinquish, 54-49 with 12:58 remaining. The Knights led by as many as 13 points in the second half before Augsburg cut the deficit to its final five-point margin.

Augsburg was plagued by poor shooting, connecting on just 29-of-77 (37.7 percent) of its field goals, including 11 three-pointers in 35 attempts (31.4 percent). Meanwhile, Carleton stroked the nets for 50.9 percent (29-of-57) on its field goals.

Jeff Jensen (Jr., Billings, Mont./Skyview HS) had 19 points and six rebounds for the Knights, while Steve Nuessle (So., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had 14 points and nine rebounds. Scott Christensen (Fr., Northfield, Minn.) contributed 11 points, five steals and four assists.

Augsburg was paced by Jeoffrey Reed (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./De La Salle HS), who had 19 points, six rebounds and four assists. Kevin Van Rossum (Sr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) hit five 3-pointers for 15 points, while Jason Beckendorf (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) had 12 points and Nate Hoerr (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) had 10 points and seven rebounds. Matt Davis (Jr., Marshall, Minn.) led the Auggies with eight rebounds.

Augsburg plays at Hamline on Wednesday, while Carleton hosts St. Olaf. Both games are at 7:30 p.m.
