NORTHFIELD, Minn. (1/17/00) -- Sara Tompkins (Jr., Adams, Minn.) scored 14 points and Laurie Peterson (Sr., Freeborn, Minn.) pulled down 15 rebounds to claw Carleton past Augsburg 57-48 in MIAC women's basketball action Monday night.
The scrappy and at times sloppy game saw Carleton down by eight points ten minutes into the first half, but tenacious play from Karen Fricke (Fr., Lincolnshire, Ill.) and Peterson tied it 20-20 at 5:29, and the Knights kept it close, trailing 30-28 at halftime. Field goals from
Jaime Kingsley (Jr., Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS) and
Adrienne Tietz (Sr., Shakopee, Minn./Monticello HS) and Carleton turnovers widened the Augsburg advantage to eight again by 7:01 in the second period.
But jump shots from Renée Willette (So., Minneapolis, Minn.), Bridget Seegers (Jr., Elkhorn, Wis.) and finally Peterson put the Knights back on top, and a Tompkins trey from the top of the key at 1:20 gave Carleton a 55-48 lead and secured the victory.
Tompkins' 14 points led all scorers. Fricke shot 100 percent from the field, including four field goals and one free throw for nine points, and Willette contributed eight points and seven rebounds. For Augsburg, Tietz,
Rachael Ekholm (So., Richfield, Minn.) and Kingsley recorded 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively.
With the victory, Carleton improves to 9-4 for the season, 7-3 in the MIAC. Augsburg slides to 4-9, 4-6 in the conference. Next up for the Knights will be St. Olaf at 6 p.m. Wednesday in West Gym. Augsburg will host Hamline on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.
