Men's Basketball --Augsburg 73, Gustavus Adolphus 69
Game Summary:
MINNEAPOLIS (1/26/00) -- Kevin Van Rossum (Sr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) scored 16 points and became the second Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball player this season to hit 200 career three-pointers on Wednesday night, as host Augsburg College held off Gustavus Adolphus College 73-69 in an MIAC game at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.
With the win, Augsburg remains in a first-place tie in the MIAC with an 11-4 overall record and 10-2 conference mark. Gustavus drops to 8-7 overall and 6-5 in the MIAC. Combined with a 66-61 win at Gustavus on Dec. 9, the win marks the first time Augsburg has swept Gustavus in MIAC regular-season play since the 1987-88 season.
Van Rossum hit four 3-pointers in the contest to give him a school-record 201 three-pointers, becoming just the sixth MIAC player to ever hit 200 in a career (including nonconference games). Kip Sparby of St. Thomas hit the 200 mark earlier this year and had 226 career extra-pointers entering tonight's play. Jim Lovrein of Carleton (1994-98) has the most career three-pointers among MIAC players, 239.
Van Rossum hit three of his three-pointers in the first half as Augsburg built a 37-28 halftime advantage. The Auggies led by as many as 17 points in the first half and 16 points in the second before the Gusties used an 18-8 run to cut the advantage to two points, 71-69, with 11 seconds remaining.
Matt Davis (Jr., Marshall, Minn.) had 11 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks, three steals and four assists for the Auggies, while Travis Hinze (Jr., Janesville, Minn./Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton HS) had 11 points and five steals. Nate Hoerr (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) had nine points and Jeoffrey Reed (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./De La Salle HS) had seven points, six rebounds and five assists.
For the Gusties, Bobby Johnson (Jr., Jackson, Minn.) paced all scorers with 19 points -- 13 in the second half -- and three steals. Chad Henke (So., Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East HS) had 16 points and six rebounds, and Hans Sviggum (Fr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) had 16 points and five assists. David Newell (Fr., Fergus Falls, Minn.) had seven points and six rebounds.
Augsburg plays at Bethel on Saturday (1/29), while Gustavus hosts Hamline. Both games are at 3 p.m.
