Football 10/28/00 -- Augsburg 12, Hamline 7
ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/28/00) --
T.J. Bramwell (So., Tomah, Wis.) scored two touchdowns and
Scott Archambault (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) picked off two passes, including a key late-game interception, as Augsburg College rallied for a 12-7 victory over Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Saturday afternoon at Hamline's Norton Stadium.
Augsburg improves to 3-5 overall and 3-4 in the MIAC with the victory, while Hamline drops to 1-7 overall and 1-6 in the MIAC.
Trailing 7-0 at halftime, Augsburg rallied for two second-half touchdowns, on a four-yard run by Bramwell midway through the third quarter and on a two-yard run by Bramwell midway through the fourth quarter.
Augsburg could muster just 206 yards of total offense (93 rushing, 113 passing), but was able to hold on for the win. Augsburg's defense held the Pipers to just 46 rushing yards on 35 carries, while allowing just 172 yards of passing and forcing three interceptions.
Shane Gunderson (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) also had an interception for the Auggies, which led to Augsburg's first touchdown. His pickoff and 25-yard return at the 8:37 mark of the third quarter placed the ball on the Hamline 5-yard line, and three plays later, Bramwell rumbled three yards for the Auggies' first score. The extra point failed and Augsburg trailed 7-6.
Archambault scored his first pickoff of the afternoon on the next drive, but an Augsburg field-goal attempt was missed.
The Auggies used a 14-play, 59-yard, six-minute drive to score the go-ahead touchdown. The drive was keyed by a 15-yard pass from
Paul Tetzloff (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) to
Sammy Gross (So., Springfield, Minn.) and a 16-yard pass from Tetzloff to
Desman Oakley (Sr., Indianola, Iowa). Bramwell rushed two yards for his second touchdown -- his second career rushing score in an Augsburg uniform. The two-point conversion attempt was intercepted.
Hamline could not convert on its last two drives, and the final drive was capped by Archambault's second interception of the day with 34 seconds left, after the Pipers had driven to the Augsburg 31-yard line.
Hamline opened the scoring early in the second quarter, as Matt Stolski rushed two yards for a touchdown at the 12:45 mark of the period. Augsburg had a chance to score twice in the second period, but a field-goal attempt was blocked by Hamline's Adam Grinsteinner, and the Auggies could not convert after
Matt Chappuis (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) blocked a punt, which put the ball at the Hamline 15-yard line with 1:50 remaining. The Auggies turned the ball over on downs.
Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) rushed for 50 yards on 10 carries to lead the Auggies, while Bramwell rushed for 33 yards on nine carries. Tetzloff completed nine passes for 113 yards. Gross had 55 receiving yards on four catches, and Oakley had two catches for 32 yards.
Andy Kunzmann threw for 163 yards for the Pipers, while Joey Kvamme's 33 rushing yards led the team. Doug Amsden paced the Pipers with 72 receiving yards on five catches. Brian Fearing led the Piper defense with seven tackles (six solo) and a sack.
Brent Peroutka (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) led the Auggie defense with nine tackles (six solo) and three pass break-ups. Chappuis had eight tackles (six solo) and two sacks, and
Andy Howard (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) had seven tackles (four solo) and three sacks. Gunderson added seven tackles (six solo).
Both Augsburg and Hamline will play in the MIAC's Metrodome Showcase next weekend at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis. Hamline will play Macalester on Friday (11/3) at 5 p.m., and Augsburg will face Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday (11/4) at 1 p.m.

THE GAME: The Augsburg College Auggies (2-5 overall, 2-4 MIAC) travel to face Hamline University (1-6 overall, 1-5 MIAC) in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. at Norton Stadium (2,000) in St. Paul, Minn.
COACHES: Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg (Augsburg '62) is in his 10th season and currently has a 48-50 career mark. Hamline coach Dick Tressel (Baldwin-Wallace '70) is in his 23rd year and has a 123-100-2 overall record.
RADIO: There is no radio coverage of Augsburg football this season.
LAST WEEK: Augsburg dropped a 20-13, double-overtime decision against Gustavus Adolphus College last Saturday at Anderson-Nelson Field. Hamline was shut out 61-0 at St. John's on Saturday.
SERIES: Hamline leads the all-time series 39-19-2. Augsburg has won the last four games in the series (15-10 at Hamline in 1999, 24-14 at Augsburg in 1998, 26-7 at Hamline in 1997 and 19-16 at Augsburg in 1996). Hamline's last win was a 35-7 home triumph on Oct. 14, 1995 at Norton Stadium. Augsburg coach
Jack Osberg is 5-4 against Hamline in his career.
LAST YEAR:
Brian Warden rushed for 100-plus yards for the second straight week, putting together a 32-carry, 126-yard performance as Augsburg scored a 15-10 win at Hamline. Warden scored his third touchdown of the season on a 1-yard plunge in the first period to open the scoring. The Pipers took the lead early in the second quarter, when Tim Couchman hit Luke Wright on a 33-yard scoring strike. The resulting conversion kick gave the Pipers a 7-6 lead. The lead held until midway through the third period, when Augsburg claimed a lead it would not relinquish. Three plays after Augsburg's
Matt Chappuis forced a fumble on a sack and
Kurt Werk recovered, Auggie quarterback
Paul Tetzloff hit
Desman Oakley on a 30-yard pass for a touchdown.
The teams then traded field goals to produce the final margin -- a 33-yard kick by Augsburg's
Matt Van Alstine and a 46-yard kick by Hamline's Steve Koehn. Augsburg's defense held Hamline to 298 yards of total offense, while the Auggie offense produced 323. Tetzloff completed 15 passes for 164 yards in the contest. Oakley had 63 receiving yards on three catches. Freshman
Nate Loughran claimed his fourth interception of the season, while
Rob Just also had a pickoff. Chappuis had 12 tackles (six solo) to lead the Auggies, while
Andy Howard had nine tackles (three solo).
Jake Kern and
Jason Van Houten had six tackles (four solo) apiece.
AUGGIES FALL 20-17 IN TRIPLE OVERTIME TO GUSTIES: Matt Gahlon (Jr., Dellwood, Minn.) caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Joe Thorvig (Jr., Stacy, Minn.) in the second overtime, and Brad Arndt (So., Woodbury, Minn.) intercepted an Augsburg pass to win the game, giving Gustavus Adolphus a 20-13, two-overtime victory over host Augsburg last Saturday at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field.
Arndt's interception, off a tip by Kevin Firkus (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) on an Auggie pass to the end zone on the first play of Augsburg's second overtime session, ended the game and gave the Gusties the win.
The teams entered the overtime tied at 6-6. Augsburg had the ball first, and scored on a five-yard touchdown pass from
Paul Tetzloff (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) to
Desman Oakley (Sr., Indianola, Iowa).
In the Gusties' first overtime possession, the Auggie defense held firm and forced a fourth-down-and-10 play from the 13-yard line, but Thorvig was able to complete a scoring pass to Brett Boese (Fr., Rochester, Minn.), which forced the second extra session.
Gustavus took the first possession of the second overtime and scored in four plays, converting a Thorvig-to-Gahlon 15-yard pass to the corner of the end zone for the score.
Augsburg led 3-0 at halftime on a
Matt Van Alstine (Sr., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) 22-yard field goal. The Gusties tied the game on a 37-yard field goal by Christian White (Sr., Northfield, Minn.), and White's 28-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter gave the Gusties a 6-3 lead.
Augsburg used a 13-play, 50-yard drive to tie the game, as Van Alstine converted a 35-yard field goal.
In the final minute of regulation, Gustavus drove the ball 61 yards to the Augsburg 11-yard line, where it set up for a potential 28-yard, game-winning field goal by White. His kick, with six seconds remaining, was wide right, but the Auggies were penalized for running into the kicker, putting the ball at the Augsburg six-yard line with two seconds left. White's 23-yard field goal attempt also was wide right, forcing overtime.
The overtime game, Augsburg's fourth in the last four years since the NCAA instituted overtime in 1996, was the second two-overtime contest between the Auggies and Gusties in history. In 1997, Augsburg and Gustavus played a two-overtime game in St. Peter, Minn., with Augsburg winning 41-35.
Gustavus outgained Augsburg by a 343-336 yardage margin, and Augsburg's 224 rushing yards was the most in a single game for the Auggies since a 253-yard rushing performance in a 56-22 win over Bethel on Nov. 7, 1997.
Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) led all players with 132 carries on 25 rushes. Tetzloff completed 14 passes for 112 yards for the Auggies.
Mark Johnson (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) had three catches for 34 yards to lead the Auggies.
Augsburg's defense was paced by
Shane Gunderson (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) and
Joe Souba (Sr., Hayward, Wis.), who had 12 tackles apiece. Souba also had a sack, as did
Andy Howard (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) and
Matt Chappuis (Jr., Faribault, Minn.).
RECORD-WATCHING: Running back
Brian Warden has moved into the top five in two Augsburg career rushing categories, and could become just the fourth Auggie to rush for 2,000 career yards this season. He enters Saturday's game with 557 rushing yards on 140 carries. On his career, Warden has 448 carries for 1,693 yards, putting him in second place all-time in career carries and fourth all-time in career rushing yards.
Wayne Graves set the career carries mark at Augsburg from 1970-73 with 497, while Marty Alger set the career rushing yardage mark with 2,226 yards from 1991-95. Warden set Augsburg's single-season rushes record with 232 carries last year, while his 858 rushing yards were fifth-best in school history (Alger's 1,011 rushing yards in 1992 is the school single-season record). Warden has eight career rushing touchdowns; the career record, 18, was set by Dan Roff from 1978-81.
Some other records that current Auggies are pursuing --
Andy Howard (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) has 7.5 sacks; the single-season record is 14, set by Bob Anderson in 1995.
Matt Chappuis (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) has five sacks and 18.5 on his career to put him third-best all-time; Anderson's 28.5 from 1992-95 is the record.
NEXT WEEK: Both teams play at the annual MIAC Metrodome Showcase at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis next weekend. Hamline plays Macalester on Friday (11/3) at 5 p.m., and Augsburg plays Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday (11/4) at 1 p.m.
