Women's Soccer 10/3/00 -- Carleton 4, Augsburg 0
MINNEAPOLIS (10/3/00) -- Sarah Frenning (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) scored two goals to lead Carleton College to a 4-0 victory over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game Tuesday night at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field.
Carleton, rated 10th in the most recent NSCAA/NCAA Division III Central Region poll, improves to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in the MIAC. Augsburg drops to 4-6 overall and 1-4 in the MIAC with its third straight loss, all by shutout.
Frenning scored Carleton's first goal just 30 seconds into the game, connecting a blast from 25 yards out. She added her second goal of the game on a feed from a corner kick by Britt Kringle (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy HS) in the 72nd minute to complete the Knights' scoring. Her goals bracketed unassisted first-half tallies from Birungi Mutebi (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS), on a steal and 15-yard shot in the 33rd minute, and from Molly Metzger (Sr., Wilmette, Ill./New Trier Township HS), on a corner drive from the left side in the 40th minute.
Carleton outshot Augsburg by a 23-7 margin, and had eight corner kicks to Augsburg's three. Cara Jones (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) had to make just one save to pick up the shutout victory in the nets for the Knights. Auggie goalkeeper
Laura Hoffman (Fr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) made five saves in the first half, and
Katie Cheese (Jr., Shakopee, Minn.) made six saves in relief in the second half.
Heidi Hilleren (Fr., Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) led the Auggies with four shots. Metzger's six shots paced the Knights.
Augsburg plays at Hamline in an MIAC game on Saturday (10/7) at 1 p.m. Carleton plays at Gustavus, also Saturday at 1 p.m.
