Volleyball 10/6-7/00 -- Augsburg at St. Thomas Tournament
ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/7/00) --
Angie Rieger (Sr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS) earned All-Tournament Team honors with her performance for Augsburg College's volleyball team as it placed third at the five-team University of St. Thomas Invitational at Schoenecker Arena on Friday and Saturday.
Augsburg opened the tournament with a thrilling, two-hour and 20-minute, five-game victory over the College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) on Friday, 17-15, 7-15, 15-7, 10-15, 21-19. In the second match Friday, Augsburg lost a four-game decision to the University of Sioux Falls (S.D.), 15-7, 12-15, 15-10, 15-2.
In Saturday's opening match, Augsburg swept Canadian Mennonite University (Alberta), 15-0, 15-8, 15-4. In the final match against host St. Thomas, the Tommies swept the Auggies for the second time in four days, 16-14, 15-9, 15-7.
Rieger had 48 kills, 34 digs and 14 blocks (three solo) during the tournament. She played in just three of the four matches, sitting out the sweep of Canadian Mennonite.
In the five-game win over St. Scholastica, Rieger paced the Auggies with 23 kills, 17 digs and four blocks.
Cassi Van Ausdall (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) had 18 kills, 23 digs and a block, while
Kevina Nakiwala (So., Kampala, Uganda/Ashby, Minn., HS)contributed 14 kills, 18 digs and a block.
Lisa Miller (So., Buffalo, Minn.) had 13 kills, and
Emily Walen (Sr., Stillwater, Minn./Hastings HS) had 64 assists and 15 digs.
Against Sioux Falls, Rieger led the way again with 16 kills, seven digs and six blocks (one solo). Van Ausdall had eight kills, nine digs and one block (solo),
Paula Pogatchnik (So., Finlayson, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) and Miller had seven kills apiece, an Walen contributed 39 assists.
Due to NCAA rules concerning matches against Canadian colleges and universites, the match against Canadian Mennonite is considered an exhibition, with the win not recorded in Augsburg's overall win record and statistics not used for season totals. Nakiwala led the Auggies with six kills, while Pogatchnik and Miller had five apiece. Walen had 14 assists.
In the final match against Sioux Falls, Rieger led the Auggies with nine kills, four blocks (two solo) and 10 digs. Van Ausdall had seven kills, six digs and three blocks (two solo), Nakiwala had 11 digs, and Walen had 22 assists, seven digs and (four blocks two solo).
Augsburg, now 4-13 overall, hosts Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Wednesday (10/11) at 7:30 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.
