Football 10/7/00 -- St. Thomas 16, Augsburg 0
MINNEAPOLIS (10/7/00) Jake Barkley (So., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) rushed for 130 yards, including an 81-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, as his University of St. Thomas football team cruised to a 16-0 victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field.
St. Thomas improves to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the MIAC with the victory, while Augsburg drops to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the MIAC with the Homecoming loss, its third straight defeat.
Barkley extended his streak of 100-yard rushing games to four with his performance Saturday, gaining 130 yards on 22 carries. He now has 797 rushing yards on 107 carries this season.
St. Thomas dominated the game, outgaining the Auggies 299 yards to 153. The Tommie defense held Augsburg to just five net yards of rushing in the game, while St. Thomas notched 196 rushing yards.
The game was a sloppy one, as the teams combined for 25 penalties for 262 yards and had 12 fumbles, of which six were lost on turnovers (four by St. Thomas, two by Augsburg).
Augsburg's offense was held in check for the entire game, as the Auggies were held to just one of 17 on third downs and could not convert on two fourth-down tries. With the shutout loss, Augsburg has now been held without a touchdown for the last 11 quarters in a row, nearly three games. Augsburg converted two field goals in last week's 28-6 loss at St. Olaf and scored its last touchdown in the first quarter of its 40-7 loss at St. John's two weeks ago.
Nick Ambrasas (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Arlington HS), making his first start at quarterback for the Tommies this season, threw for 103 yards, completing nine of 20 passes with one interception. Andrew Hilliard (So., Woodbury, Minn.) caught two passes for 51 yards, and Jon Learn (Jr., Red Wing, Minn.) had four catches for 39 yards.
Barkley scored his touchdown at the 7:22 mark of the second quarter, and the Tommies held a 7-0 halftime lead. Early in the third quarter, Augsburg's
Larry Lyden (Jr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) recovered a St. Thomas fumble at the Augsburg 1-yard line. But three plays later, Auggie quarterback
Dave Fransen (So., Farmington, Minn.) was sacked in the end zone by Sean O'Leary (So., Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln HS) for a safety, giving the Tommies a 9-0 lead.
Conor Casey (Jr., Washburn, Wis.) blocked an Auggie punt in the fourth quarter, giving the Tommies the ball at the Augsburg 2-yard line. On the next play, Nick Whitehead (So., East Bethel, Minn./St. Francis HS) rushed for a two-yard touchdown, securing the victory for the Tommies.
Augsburg used two quarterbacks in the game, as regular starter
Paul Tetzloff (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) was forced to miss the game due to a groin injury.
John Goodale (Jr., Buffalo, Minn.), making his third career start, completed 10 of 19 passes for 97 yards. Fransen threw for 51 yards, completing five of 13 passes with one interception.
John Rotter's (Sr., Montgomery, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale HS) 43 yards on four receptions led the Auggies.
Rick Joslin (So., Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) had 12 tackles (seven solo) to lead the Tommie defense, while Jon Kaiser (Fr., Mora, Minn.) had 10 tackles (seven solo). O'Leary had eight tackles (four solo) and the third quarter sack for the safety.
Matt Chappuis (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) had 10 tackles (nine solo) to lead the Auggies, while
Scott Archambault (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) had eight tackles (six solo).
Augsburg plays at Macalester College next Saturday (10/14) at 1 p.m., while St. Thomas plays at St. Olaf in Northfield, Minn., next Saturday, also at 1 p.m.St. Thomas (3-2 overall, 3-1 MIAC) -- 0-7-2-7--16

Football 10/7/00 -- St. Thomas at Augsburg Game Notes
THE GAME: The Augsburg College Auggies (1-3 overall, 1-2 MIAC) host the University of St. Thomas Tommies (2-2 overall, 2-1 MIAC) in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 1 p.m. at Augsburg's Anderson-Nelson Field (2,000) in Minneapolis, Minn.
COACHES: Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg (Augsburg '62) is in his 10th season and currently has a 47-48 career mark. St. Thomas coach Don Roney (St. Thomas '84) is in his third season and has a 16-8 career record.
RADIO: There is no radio coverage of Augsburg football this season.
LAST WEEK: Augsburg dropped its second game in a row, 28-6 at St. Olaf last Saturday, while St. Thomas was shut out 17-0 in its annual rivalry game with St. John's on Saturday at O'Shaughnessy Stadium in St. Paul.
SERIES: St. Thomas leads the all-time series 46-8-2. The Tommies have the longest current winning streak among MIAC schools over the Auggies, a four-game winning streak. Augsburg's last win over UST was a 28-7 win at home on Oct. 21, 1995. Augsburg has just won twice over St. Thomas since 1971, the other win a 37-7 victory at home on Oct. 17, 1991. Augsburg and St. Thomas had their first meeting in 1929 (a 32-0 UST victory), and have played every year since 1952.
LAST YEAR: Greg Kaiser rushed for two touchdowns and threw two touchdown passes in St. Thomas' 30-20 victory over Augsburg on Oct. 23, 1999 at Anderson-Nelson Field. St. Thomas took advantage of six Augsburg turnovers -- five fumbles and one interception -- to claim the victory. St. Thomas outgained Augsburg by a 371-331 margin, though the Tommie defense limited Augsburg to just 11 net rushing yards in the game. St. Thomas rushed 58 times for 230 yards -- 126 from Jake Barkley on 28 carries.
John Goodale made his second collegiate start at quarterback for Augsburg and threw for 320 yards on 19 completions, including an 82-yard scoring pass to
Damien Rochon-Washington with 1:31 remaining. Augsburg rallied from a 30-7 third-quarter deficit with two scores late in the game. An eight-yard pass from Goodale to tight end
Ryan Hupka preceeded the long pass to Rochon-Washington. Kaiser threw a first-quarter, 16-yard touchdown pass to Jon Learn and a four-yard scoring strike to Andy Kaiser in the second quarter.
AUGGIES DROP SECOND IN A ROW AT ST. OLAF: Manuel Spreigl rushed for 199 yards and three touchdowns Saturday, leading host St. Olaf College to a dominating 28-6 victory over Augsburg last Saturday at Manitou Field.
The Oles dominated in nearly every facet of the game to claim the win and break a three-season losing streak to the Auggies. St. Olaf outgained the Auggies by a 341-216-yard margin, including 213 rushing yards to Augsburg's 67.
Two of Spreigl's touchdowns capped long scoring drives for the Oles in the first half, as they held the ball for 37 minutes, 25 seconds and 70 plays to Augsburg's 22:35 and 59 plays. Spreigl's first touchdown, a 1-yard run with 6:45 to play in the first quarter, capped a 13-play, 75 yard, 6:15 drive; his second score, a 6-yard run at the 2:36 mark of the second quarter, ended a 12-play, 51-yard, 6:23 drive. Spreigl's final touchdown, a 67-yard run with 3:15 remaining in the third quarter, broke the game wide open in favor of the Oles. The Oles' other score came on a 40-yard pass from Brian Senske to Steve Ryan at the 5:47 mark of the third period.
Augsburg could manage just two field goals from
Matt Van Alstine (Sr., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS), a career-best 46-yarder to close the first half, and a 30-yarder early in the fourth period.
Spreigl had 199 rushing yards on 24 carries, accounting for all but 14 of St. Olaf's rushing yards. Senske completed nine of 14 passes for 128 yards, including four passes for 68 yards to Ryan.
The Oles took advantage of outstanding field position in the first half to build a 14-3 halftime advantage. St. Olaf's average field-position start in the first half was at its own 45-yard line; in comparison, Augsburg averaged a start at its own 19 in the first half, including two drives starting inside the Augsburg 6-yard line.
Paul Tetzloff (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) completed 15 of 29 passes for 149 yards to lead the Auggies.
Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) had 14 carries for 64 yards, and
Mark Johnson (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) had four recpetions for 61 yards.
Brent Peroutka (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) led the Auggies with 11 tackles (three solo), while
Larry Lyden (Jr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) had nine tackles (four solo) and
Kurt Werk (Sr., Herman, Minn./West Central Area HS) had eight (five solo).
Andy Howard (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) led the Auggies with two sacks.
"We were disappointed in how we played last week. It wasn't up to our caliber of play," said Augsburg coach
Jack Osberg. "We came out flat and St. Olaf really execued well. We need to bounce back. We're capable of playing good football, but we're just misfiring. That has to change."
WARD MOVES FROM OFFENSE TO DEFENSE, CHAPPUIS RETURNS TO LINEUP: A couple of position changes.
Brandon Ward (Sr., Vermillion, Minn./Hastings HS) moves from the offensive line to the defensive line, where he will start at center Saturday.
Matt Chappuis (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) returns to the defensive line after missing last week's loss to St. Olaf with a concussion. He has been cleared to play Saturday.
RECORD-WATCHING: Running back
Brian Warden has moved into the top five in two Augsburg career rushing categories, and could become just the fourth Auggie to rush for 2,000 career yards this season. He enters Saturday's game with 273 rushing yards on 80 carries. On his career, Warden has 388 carries for 1,409 yards, putting him in fourth place all-time in career carries and fifth all-time in career rushing yards.
Wayne Graves set the career carries mark at Augsburg from 1970-73 with 497, while Marty Alger set the career rushing yardage mark with 2,226 yards from 1991-95. Warden set Augsburg's single-season rushes record with 232 carries last year, while his 858 rushing yards were fifth-best in school history (Alger's 1,011 rushing yards in 1992 is the school single-season record). Warden has eight career rushing touchdowns; the career record, 18, was set by Dan Roff from 1978-81.
Quarterback
Paul Tetzloff now has 4,487 career yards entering Saturday's game. He is now third in school history in career passing yardage, fourth in career pass completions (354), sixth in career pass attempts (604) and second in career passing touchdowns (32). Current quarterbacks coach Derrin Lamker (1993-97) holds all of Augsburg's career passing records -- 1,022 passing attempts, 550 completions, 6,624 yards and 46 touchdowns. Tetzloff enters Saturday's game with 68 completions on 134 attempts with three interceptions and two touchdowns for 682 passing yards this season.
Some other records that current Auggies are pursuing --
Andy Howard has five sacks; the single-season record is 14, set by Bob Anderson in 1995.
Matt Chappuis has two sacks and 15.5 on his career to put him fifth-best all-time; Anderson's 28.5 from 1992-95 is the record.
AUGGIES RECORD AT HOME IS STRONG: At Anderson-Nelson Field, affectionately known as "The Cage" by Auggies, Augsburg has put together at 26-18 record since 1991. Since the field opened in 1984, Augsburg is 29-45-1 at home. On artificial turf (including games at the Metrodome and Fargodome), Augsburg is 33-21 since 1991 and 36-52-1 since 1984.
Homecoming, and the positive atmosphere of returning home to Anderson-Nelson Field, may be just the salve for the Auggies' recent wounds.
"Homecoming is always a good time of the year. These are the opportunities for our guys to get up and play hard," said Augsburg coach
Jack Osberg. "St. Thomas is a good football team. We're going to have to be up for this game and play our best in order to win."
SCOUTING THE TOMMIES: The University of St. Thomas is coming off a 17-0 home loss to St. John's University in the annual rivalry game, this year played before 7,000 people in St. Paul, Minn. The loss was the first shutout defeat for the Tommies since 1980, covering 94 games. St. Thomas has been shutout only three times since 1980. St. John's beat St. Thomas for the seventh time in the last eight meetings.
Much like Augsburg's loss to St. John's two weeks ago, the Johnnies took advantage of St. Thomas mistakes and missed opportunities; the Tommies could not convert five drives inside the St. John's 32-yard line into scores, missing two field-goal attempts and turning the ball over on downs at the St. John's 8-yard line midway through the fourth quarter.
St. Thomas running back Jake Barkley (So., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) may be the best running back in the conference. He has had three straight 100-yard rushing games (including 137 yards on 29 carries against St. John's), and has 667 rushing yards on 85 carries entering today's game.
Nick Ambrasas (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Arlington HS) may get his first start at quarterback this season. He relieved starter Alex Jadin (So., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame HS) in the second quarter of the loss to the Johnnies and threw for 117 yards (9 of 18 with one interception). Jadin has thrown for 350 yards and three touchdowns this year. The decision will likely be a game-time one for UST coach Don Roney.
NEXT WEEK: Augsburg returns to the road next Saturday with an MIAC game at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn. Game time is 1 p.m. St. Thomas plays at St. Olaf next Saturday, also at 1 p.m. The Auggies return home to Anderson-Nelson Field on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m., hosting Gustavus Adolphus College.
