Men's Basketball 12/30/00 -- Augsburg 68, California Lutheran 66
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (12/30/00) --
Jeff Willihnganz (Fr., Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West HS) scored 19 points to lead Augsburg College, as the Auggies rallied for a 68-66 victory over host California Lutheran University in the third-place game of the CLU Lutheran Brotherhood men's basketball tournament Saturday night.
Augsburg improves to 4-3 overall with the victory in the first-ever game between the two schools. California Lutheran drops to 4-4 overall. In the tournament championship game, Pacific Lutheran topped Luther (Iowa) 76-71.
The game was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team having more than a five-point lead. CLU led 5-0 before the Auggies rallied early with an 11-2 run to take an 11-7 lead. CLU led 33-32 at halftime.
With CLU ahead 60-56 with 4:22 remaining, Augsburg gained the lead on a five-point possession.
Travis Hinze (Sr., Janesville, Minn./Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton HS) nailed a three-pointer just as teammate
Josh Natzel (Jr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) was fouled. Natzel hit his two free throws to give Augsburg a 61-60 lead, an advantage the Auggies would not give up the rest of the way.
Hinze had 14 points for the Auggies, while
Tommy Chatman (Sr., Shakopee, Minn./Jordan HS) had his first double-double of the year, with 15 points and 14 rebounds. He added three assists and three steals.
Willihnganz had four 3-pointers in the contest, giving him 10 extra-pointers in the tournament. He led the Auggies in scoring in both tourney games.
California Lutheran was paced by Justin Muth (Sr., Montara, Calif./Half Moon Bay HS), who had 21 points, 14 rebounds and four assists. Victor Esquer (So., Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) had 20 points, and Ryan Hodges (Fr., Elk Grove, Calif.) and Richard Iskenderian (Sr., Visalia, Calif./Golden West HS) had eight points apiece.
Hinze was the lone Auggie named to the All-Tournament Team. Also named were CLU's Muth, Pacific Lutheran's Parker Barth and Neil Mendez, and Luther's Bryon Moeller and Jared Bly. Barth was named the tournament Most Valuable Player.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegate Athletic Conference play hosting Macalester on Wednesday (1/3/01) at 7:30 p.m. at Si Melby Hall. California Lutheran hosts Keene State (New Hampshire) on Tuesday (1/2/01) at 7:30 p.m.
