Men's Basketball -- St. John's 76, Augsburg 69
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (2/12/00) -- St. John's University used balanced scoring and outstanding shooting to derail visiting Augsburg College 76-69 in a key Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Saturday night at Sexton Arena in SJU's Warner Palestra.
With the win, St. John's improves to 17-4 overall and 13-4 in the MIAC, taking sole possession of second place in the conference standings. Augsburg drops to 13-7 overall and 12-5 in the MIAC, falling into third place.
Luke Witt led the Johnnies with 14 points, four rebounds and three steals. Troy Bigalke had 13 points, nine rebounds and three steals, while Mike Nester had 13 points and seven rebounds. John Frie notched 12 points and six rebounds.
Matt Davis (Jr., Marshall, Minn.) led the Auggies with his second double-double of the year, scoring 16 points and adding 12 rebounds. He also had four assists. Jeoffrey Reed (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./De La Salle HS) had 16 points, five rebounds and four assists, and Chris York (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.) scored 11 points.
St. John's hit 53.6 percent (30-of-56) of its field goals, while Augsburg was limited to 30 percent (9-of-30) in the second half, keeping the Auggies from overcoming a six-point halftime deficit. Augsburg shot 41.8 percent (23-of-55) from the field in the game.
Augsburg hosts St. Olaf on Monday (2/14), while St. John's plays at Bethel. Both games are at 7:30 p.m.
