NORTHFIELD, Minn. (9/27/00) -- Host St. Olaf College defeated a hard-charging Augsburg team 3-2 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's volleyball match Wednesday night. The Oles took control of the match from the first serve, winning the first game 15-5 and setting the pace for what many anticipated to be a three-game match. The Auggies played much tougher in the second game, but when St. Olaf ground out a 17-15 win, the match seemed all but over. The Auggies had different ideas, however. They pulled off 15-13 and 15-12 wins over heavily favored St. Olaf in the match's third and fourth games, tying the contest and forcing a final game. The Oles triumphed 15-10 in the fifth, completing a homecoming week victory before their home fans in Skoglund Athletic Center.
St. Olaf's Nicole Trnka (Jr., Morristown, Minn.) and Shannah Olson (So., Elk River, Minn.) led all players in kills, recording 23 and 17 respectively. Trnka also served four aces, as did teammate Jenny Knudson (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.).
Cassi Van Ausdall (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) played an outstanding game for Augsburg with 18 kills and hustling for 24 digs.
Angie Rieger (Sr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS) had 15 kills and 12 digs.
The win moves St. Olaf, ranked number seven nationally in the most recent AVCA poll, to 3-0 in the MIAC and 12-2 overall. Augsburg falls to 2-9 overall and 0-3 in the conference. On Friday, Sept. 29, St. Olaf travels to Concordia College for a 7:30 p.m. game while Augsburg plays host to Carleton College.
