Men's Basketball 1/20/01 -- Gustavus Adolphus 78, Augsburg 74

ST. PETER, Minn. (1/20/01) -- The Gustavus Adolphus College men's basketball team set itself above the rest of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on Saturday when the Golden Gusties defeated Augsburg 78-74 on Gus Young Court in St. Peter in front of a near-capacity crowd.
Gustavus trailed most of the first half, but took a one-point lead into the locker room when David Newell finished the lay up on a pass from Kirk Walberg with under three seconds to play. Augsburg then regained the lead at the start of the second half and extended it to seven points at one point in the contest. Gustavus, though, would not go away, battling back to take the lead in the closing minutes of this hard fought battle.
Although the Gusties shot a miserable 56 percent (14-of-25) from the free-throw line, 12 of those were made in the second half. The Gusties were 6-of-9 from beyond the arc for 66.7 percent, while Augsburg struggled from long range, making only 3-of-15 three-point baskets. Gustavus fired 55.8 percent from the floor in the contest, while Augsburg made 44.8 percent of its shots.
Bobby Johnson led the Gusties with 18 points, five rebounds, two assists, three blocks, and three steals, but fouled out in the closing minutes of the game.
Matt Davis (Sr., Marshall, Minn.) led the Auggies, scoring 24 points on 12-of-14 shooting.
Tommy Chatman (Sr., Shakopee, Minn./Jordan HS) added 20 for Augsburg. Davis added eight rebounds before he fouled out of the game. Three other Gusties scored in double figures as Walberg scored 13 while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out four assists. Chad Henke recorded another double-double, as he scored 12 points and grabbed 10 boards. Newell scored 13 on 5-of-6 shooting and collected six rebounds.
Gustavus improves to 13-1 overall and 9-1 in the MIAC. Augsburg falls to 9-5 overall and 8-2 in the conference. This is the fourth time a Mark Hanson coached Gustavus squad has gone 9-1 in the front half of the MIAC schedule. Those teams won two titles and finished second in 1997, but went on to win the playoff in that year, earning the automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
The Gusties play next on Wednesday (1/24) at St. Olaf at 7:30 p.m., while Augsburg plays at Carleton on Wednesday, also at 7:30 p.m.. St. Olaf (5-10) defeated Carleton on Saturday to improve to 3-8 in conference action.
