Men's Basketball 1/31/01 -- Macalester 81, Augsburg 80 (OT)
ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/31/01) -- Ben Van Thorre (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) nailed a three-pointer with 2.4 seconds left in overtime and added a free throw with 1.6 seconds to go to lift Macalester College (8-8, 6-7 MIAC) to an 81-80 victory over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at the Macalester Gymnasium. It was the Scots' first win over Augsburg since January 1990, breaking a string of 22 straight losses to the Auggies.
Augsburg tied the game at the end of regulation with on a
Jeff Willihnganz (Fr., Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West HS) three-pointer with 02.5 seconds to go and led by six points midway through the overtime session. Following Van Thorre's game-tying three-pointer near the end of overtime, Augsburg attempted a full-court pass from behind its baseline, only to lose possession of the ball when the pass hit the Macalester Gymnasium ceiling. Van Thorre was fouled immediately on Macalester's in-bounds pass and made the first free throw to put Mac up 81-80.
Doug Benson (Jr., Maple Plain, Minn./Orono HS) went 10-for-12 from the field and finished with 23 points to pace the Scots. Van Thorre added 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Travis Hinze (Sr., Janesville, Minn./Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton HS) had 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals to pace Augsburg (10-7, 9-4 MIAC), while
Nathan Hoerr (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) added 14 points.
The loss was Augsburg's fourth in its last six games.
Both teams return to action on Thursday (2/1/01) at 7:30 p.m. in games rescheduled after Monday's MIAC-postponed games on Monday. Augsburg hosts Hamline at Si Melby Hall, while Macalester plays at Carleton.
