Volleyball 10/12-13/01 -- Augsburg at Tommie Classic Tournament

ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/13/01) -- Paula Pogatchnik (Jr., Finlayson, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) earned All-Tournament Team honors in leading Augsburg College to a 2-2, third-place finish at the University of St. Thomas Tommie Classic volleyball tournament at the Schoenecker Arena on Friday and Saturday.

Pogatchnik accumulated 34 kills, 40 digs and three blocks in the four matches on the weekend, as Augsburg moved its record to 9-15 overall.

Augsburg opened the tournament with a three-game sweep of Upper Iowa University, 32-30, 30-20, 30-22, on Friday. Later Friday, the Auggies lost to eventual tournament champion Northwestern-Roseville in four games, 22-30, 30-19, 30-21, 30-16. On Saturday, the Auggies opened with a three-game sweep of Presentation College (S.D.), 30-20, 30-18, 30-21, before falling to host St. Thomas in four games, 23-30, 30-19, 30-18, 30-19.

Pogatchnik had 13 kills and nine digs in the win over Upper Iowa; eight kills, 11 digs and two blocks in the loss to Northwestern; four kills and 10 digs in the win over Presentation; and nine kills and 10 digs in the loss to the Tommies.

Laura Wagner (Fr., West Bend, Wis./West Bend West HS) led the Auggies with 59 kills, connecting in double figures in every match. She also had 45 digs, eight blocks (one solo) and seven service aces. She had 13 kills and eight digs in the Upper Iowa match; 16 kills, 13 digs and five blocks (one solo) in the Northwestern match; 12 kills, nine digs and three service aces in the Presentation match and 18 kill , 15 digs and two blocks in the St. Thomas match. She has scored in double figures in kills in 17 of Augsburg's 24 matches this season and has six kill-dig "double-doubles."

Augsburg's blocking continued to be solid, as the Auggies connected on 28 team blocks in the four matches. The Auggies now have 191 team blocks with six matches remaining in the regular season, already more than last season's 189.5 total. Lisa Miller (Jr., Buffalo, Minn.) led the Auggies with 17 blocks on the weekend, including six against Northwestern and five against St. Thomas. She also had 24 kills and 11 digs. Kelly Larvick (Jr., Good Thunder, Minn./Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial HS) had 10 blocks (three solo) in the four matches.

In three matches, Amy Degner (Fr., Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS) had 102 assists, to go with five blocks and 20 digs. Kristy Larson (Fr., Pine Island, Minn.) contributed 31 kills and six blocks (one solo).

As a team, Augsburg hit well on the weekend, connecting on a .258 attack percentage (185 kills, 62 errors in 476 chances). The Auggies hit an impressive .381 as a team in the win over Upper Iowa, with Wagner hitting .667 (13 kills, one error in 18 chances). They also hit .303 as a team against Presentation.

Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a match Wednesday (10/17) night at 7:30 p.m., against St. Olaf at Si Melby Hall.
