MINNEAPOLIS (10/17/01) -- Three players scored double-doubles in kills and digs, leading St. Olaf College to a three-game sweep of Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match Wednesday night at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall. Game scores were 30-21, 30-27, 30-20.
In a match that lasted just one hour, 10 minutes, the Oles cruised to the easy win to improve to 17-1 overall, 9-1 in the MIAC. Augsburg dropped to 9-16 overall and 4-1 in the MIAC, dropping its third conference match in a row and fifth in its last seven matches.
Shannah Olson (Jr., Elk River, Minn.) led the Oles with 12 kills and 13 digs, while Veronica Cherne (Fr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had 12 kills and 12 digs, and Nicole Trnka (Sr., Morristown, Minn./Bethlehem Academy HS) had 11 kills and 11 digs. All three players hit above .300 in attack percentage, with Trnka hitting .321 and Olson and Cherne hitting .320. As a team, the Oles hit .289 (53 kills, 18 errors in 121 chances).
On the other side of the net, Augsburg struggled with errors and missed opportunities, hitting just .088 as a team (27 kills, 18 errors in 102 chances) and committing 11 service errors, eight receiving errors and a block error.
Cherne had six of her kills in the first game, as the Oles pulled away from a 12-12 game with a 9-3 scoring run down the stretch. Olson had nine kills in the second game, hitting .500. She had five kills in the Oles' final eight points of the second frame. Trnka dominated the third game, wtih seven kills and a .462 attack percentage. She also closed the game strong, notching the final four points of the game on kills.
Brie Mattson (Jr., Anoka, Minn.) had 41 assists and eight digs, Emily Ganzlow-Wold (Jr., Madison, Wis./Madison West HS) had nine kills and Andrea Cuff (So., Seattle, Wash./Bellevue Christian Academy) had three service aces.
Augsburg was paced by
Laura Wagner (Fr., West Bend, Wis./West Bend West HS), who had nine kills,nine digs and two blocks.
Paula Pogatchnik (Jr., Finlayson, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) had six kills and five digs.
Amy Degner (Fr., Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS) had 20 assists and five digs, and
Anna Piermantier (So., Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) had 12 digs.
Alli Burgess (So., Soudan, Minn./Tower-Soudan HS) had three service aces.
Kelly Larvick (Jr., Good Thunder, Minn./Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial HS) and
Denise Foster (Jr., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) had five kills apiece, Larvick adding two blocks.
St. Olaf competes in the St. Benedict Classic on Friday and Saturday (10/19-20), while Augsburg is off this weekend. Both teams close the MIAC season next Wednesday (10/24) at home at 7:30 p.m., Augsburg hosting Bethel and St. Olaf hosting Carleton.
