Women's Soccer 10/24/01 -- St. Thomas 4, Augsburg 0
ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/24/01) -- The University of St. Thomas women's soccer team moved within one victory of securing both an NCAA Division III national playoff berth and at least a share of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship with Wednesday's 4-0 victory over visiting Augsburg College on a cold, windy day on the south campus field.
The Tommies, who outshot Augsburg 27-2, got goals from four different players and recorded their 10th shutout of the season.
UST broke a scoreless tie in the 43rd minute with Tessie Thompson's goal (assisted by Kristen Keith). St. Thomas used three second-half goals to pull away. Catie Gibson scored in the 60th minute, and Katie Flodin scored in the 61st minute, both assisted by Natalie Walz. Maggie Curran blooped the final goal into the top corner of the net in the 74th minute to close the scoring.
UST sophomore Jessica Christopherson played 82 minutes in goal and Katie Ruesink played the final eight for the shutout.
Laura Hoffman (So., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) made 14 saves in goal for the Auggies, who had a goal disallowed by offsides in the 38th minute.
The Tommies (14-2-1 overall, 9-1 MIAC), ranked 19th nationally, finish the regular season Saturday (10/27) at home vs. Concordia-Moorhead at 1 p.m. Augsburg (7-8-1 overall, 4-5-1 MIAC) closes its season with a Saturday game at St. Benedict at 11:30 a.m. The Tommies and Macalester each have one loss in the conference, and if both win their remaining games they'll tie at 10-1. The Tommies would get the MIAC's automatic berth based on their 1-0 overtime win over the Scots. The Scots finish Wednesday night at home against St. Mary's and Friday night at home against Gustavus. Carleton and Gustavus went into Wednesday with just two MIAC losses.
