Men's Basketball 2/20/01 -- MIAC Playoffs -- Bethel 72, Augsburg 59
ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (2/20/01) -- Bethel College featured a balanced offensive attack as the Royals won their first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball playoff game since 1991 in a 72-59 win over Augsburg College Tuesday night in the first round of the MIAC playoffs.
Bethel, now 17-8 overall, travels to Gustavus on Thursday (2/22) at 7:30 p.m. for the conference semifinals. The loss ended Augsburg's season at 12-13, giving the Auggies their first losing record since the 1993-94 season (10-14 overall). Augsburg lost its last six games in a row to end the season.
Bethel jumped out to a 15-point halftime lead, 45-30, behind nine points from senior guard Jesse Peterson (Sr., Milaca, Minn.) and eight points from junior forward Josh Smith (Jr., Braham, Minn.). The Royals shot 52.9 percent from the field in the first half as they controlled play and forced the Auggies into seven turnovers. Bethel turned the ball over just twice in the first half.
Augsburg went on a 17-6 run to start the second half and get within four points at 51-47 with 10:34 remaining. However, Bethel followed with an 18-5 run over the next six minutes to put the score out of reach for Augsburg.
Bethel had four players in double figures and shot 48 percent from the field in the win. Peterson finished with 14 points and a season high seven rebounds. Senior forward Matt Newman (Sr., Lebanon, Ohio) added 13 points. Juniors Smith, Eric Robertson (Jr., Andover, Minn.) and sophomore Joe Madson (Sr., Redwood Falls, Minn.) scored 10 points each.
The Auggies shot just 36.4 percent from the field and were led by senior guard Travis Hinze (Sr., Janesville, Minn./Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton HS) with a game-high 18 points. Tommy Chatman (Sr., Shakopee, Minn./Jordan HS) had nine points and seven rebounds, while Chris York (So., Burnsville, Minn.) had four points, eight rebounds and six assists.
