Women's Soccer 9/18/01 -- Augsburg 0, St. Mary's 0 (2 OT)
MINNEAPOLIS (9/18/01) -- Goalkeepers
Laura Hoffman (So., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) and Colleen O'Hearn (Sr., Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) each made nine saves to record shutouts, as the Augsburg College and St. Mary's University women's soccer squads played to a 0-0 tie in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Tuesday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
It was a story of two halves, as Augsburg dominated the first half but could not score, and St. Mary's grabbed the momentum in the second half but could not put the ball in the net. Augsburg moves to 2-2-1 overall, while St. Mary's moves to 1-3-2 overall. It was the first MIAC contest for both teams.
With the scoreless draw, St. Mary's has now gone five straight games without scoring a goal -- a stretch totalling 526 minutes. Augsburg recorded its third straight shutout, extending its streak of not allowing an opponent goal to 330 straight minutes.
The game was nearly decided with 12 minutes to play in regulation, when St. Mary's had a corner kick and two shot attempts hit the crossbar, one off a deflection from Augsburg goalkeeper Hoffman. It was the closest scoring attempt for either team in the contest.
Augsburg had seven shots in the first half, while St. Mary's did not get off a shot attempt. But in the second half, St. Mary's outshot the Auggies 6-5, and claimed a 5-2 shot advantage in the 30 minutes of overtime. Augsburg hampered itself by being called for offsides 11 times.
Katie Curran (So., Apple Valley, Minn.) had five shots to lead St. Mary's, while Katie Lentz (Sr., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) had three shots.
Kristi Ofstad (So., Rapid City, S.D./Stevens HS),
Heidi Hilleren (So., Duluth, Minn./East HS) and
Jazz Burch (So., Minnetonka, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) had three shots each for the Auggies.
Both teams return to MIAC play on Saturday (9/22), with St. Mary's hosting Carleton at 1 p.m. and Augsburg hosting Bethel at 6 p.m.
