Women's Soccer 9/22/01 -- Bethel 2, Augsburg 1
MINNEAPOLIS (9/22/01) -- Angie Gutierrez (Jr., Lima, Peru) scored two goals for Bethel College in a three-minute span of the second half, lifting the Royals to a 2-1 victory over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer contest Saturday night at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Gutierrez's first goal, on a feed past a defender from Elizabeth Swenson (Sr., St. Anthony, Minn.) in the 62nd minute, tied the game at 1-1. In the 65th minute, Gutierrez received a solid feed from Becky Butters (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) on the right side of the penalty box, and she shot it past Auggie goalkeeper
Laura Hoffman (So., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) for the eventual game-winning goal.
Bethel improved to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC with the victory, while Augsburg dropped to 2-3-1 overall and 0-1-1 in league play.
Augsburg scored in the sixth minute of the game, when
Jenny Martin (Fr., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) scored on a nifty give-and-go play from
Jazz Burch (So., Minnetonka, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) inside the penalty box. The Auggies dominated the first half, outshooting Bethel by a 7-4 margin.
But the Royals grabbed the momentum in the second half, getting six shots to Augsburg's four and controlling the action in the Auggie end for most of the frame.
Hoffman made five saves for the Auggies; Jennie Pulford (Fr., Richfield, Minn.) notched three saves for Bethel.
Augsburg returns to action on Monday night (9/24), hosting Macalester in a game rescheduled from Sept. 14. Game time is 7 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field. Bethel returns to action on Wednesday, hosting St. Thomas at 4 p.m.
