Women's Soccer 9/24/01 -- Macalester 1, Augsburg 0
MINNEAPOLIS (9/24/01) -- Margot Kane (Sr., Auburdale, Mass./Newton North HS) scored the only goal of the game in the eighth minute, as her Macalester College women's soccer team gained a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Monday night at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
In improving to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the MIAC, Macalester peppered Auggie goalkeeper
Laura Hoffman (So., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) with shots, outshooting the Auggies by a 24-4 margin. But Hoffman was up to the challenge, playing one of the best games of her young career with 14 saves.
Augsburg dropped to 2-4-1 overall and 0-2-1 in league play, losing their second conference game in a row.
Kane scored on a drilled shot in front of the net from 15 yards out, coming on a feed from Claire Parisi (Jr., South Bend, Ind./John Adams HS). The Scots controlled the tempo of the game throughout, outshooting the Auggies by a 16-3 margin in the first half and by a 8-1 margin in the second. But several point-blank shots were stopped by Hoffman, keeping the Scots at bay.
Jessica Bullen (Fr., Ashland, Ore.) had five shots, while Kane had four shots and Licinia McMorrow (So., San Jose, Calif.) and Erin Hoople (Fr., Rockford, Ill./Auburn HS) had three shots apiece.
Carrie Velenchenko (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.) had two shots for Augsburg.
Both teams return to action on Wednesday (9/26) at 4 p.m., Augsburg hosting Concordia and Macalester playing at St. Benedict.
