Rowena Sizer * (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) led all players with 13 points, while
Kelly Chapman (So., Willernie, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) notched her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds, as Augsburg College held on for a 49-44 win over Macalester College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.
The win, Augsburg's second in a row, improved the Auggies' record to 3-6 overall, 2-4 in the MIAC. Macalester, playing with just eight players on the roster, dropped to 2-6 overall, 1-5 in MIAC play.
Augsburg scored the first 10 points of the game over a six-minute stretch, with Sizer scoring five points. But the Scots slowly rallied back to cut the lead to 25-23 at halftime. Sizer had nine points and two three-pointers at halftime.
Macalester took its only lead of the game, 28-27, three-and-a-half minutes into the second half, as Sarah Jacoby (So., Mullbery, Ind./Clinton Prairie HS) completed a three-point play, but the Auggies took the lead back on a three-pointer from
Ashley Sasek (Fr., Waukesha, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) at the 14:57 mark. Augsburg led by as many as eight points midway through the second frame, but the Scots rallied to tie the game at 41-41 with 2:15 remaining. However, Augsburg outscored the Scots by an 8-3 margin down the stretch to claim the final margin, with Chapman connecting on 4-of-4 free throws.
Sasek had six points and five assists for the Auggies, while
Allison Illa * (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) had four points, four steals and nine rebounds.
Julie Andert (So., Eden Prairie, Minn.) notched a career high with 13 rebounds to lead all players.
Macalester was paced by Holly Sciborski (Fr., Neenah, Wis./St. Mary's Central HS), who came off the bench to score 11 points and add seven rebounds. She had nine points in the first half. Candace Martin (Fr., Cheyenne, Wyo./Central HS) had eight points and four steals, and Emily Koller (Jr., Greybull, Wyo.) had seven points and eight rebounds. Jacoby had five points, four blocked shots and eight rebounds.
Both teams return to MIAC action on Saturday (1/5) at 3 p.m., with Macalester hosting St. Olaf and Augsburg playing at St. Mary's.
