Julie Andert (So., Eden Prairie, Minn.) and
Allison Illa * (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) had point-rebound double-doubles, and
Kelly Chapman (So., Willernie, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) had 18 points to lead all scorers, as Augsburg College claimed a 64-53 victory over the College of St. Catherine in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game Monday night at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.
Illa had 10 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, and Andert scored a career-high 14 points and had 10 rebounds for her first double-double, as Augsburg improved to 4-7 overall and 3-5 in MIAC play. Chapman had 18 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
St. Catherine, off to its best start since rejoining the MIAC in women's basketball since the 1997-98 season, drops to 6-5 overall and 3-5 in the MIAC.
Outrebounding St. Catherine by a 55-32 margin, Augsburg never trailed in the game. The game was tied only once. A 15-7 run over a five-minute span midway through the first half gave the Auggies a dominating 51-40 lead with 5:59 left. Augsburg led by as many as 12 points down the stretch.
In all, four Auggies scored in double figures, as
Ashley Sasek (Fr., Waukesha, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) scored 10 points for the first time in her career. She added five rebounds and five assists. For Chapman, it was the 18th time she has scored in double figures in her 34-game Auggie career, and the eighth time in her 11 games this season.
Kate Stodolka (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.) led St. Catherine with 14 points, while Lisa Juth (Fr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) had nine points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Katie Jones (So., Alpha, Minn./Martin County West HS) had nine points and four blocked shots, and Holly Wiste (Fr., Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) had eight points, six steals and four assists.
Augsburg also took advantage of being sent to the foul line frequently by the Wildcats. The Auggies converted 20-of-33 free throws (60.6 percent), while St. Catherine managed just a 7-of-11 performance from the line (63.6 percent). Augsburg also converted 21 points off of turnovers, while St. Catherine had just 11 ponits off turnovers.
Both teams return to MIAC action on Wednesday (1/9) at 7:30 p.m., Augsburg hosting St. Benedict and St. Catherine hosting Gustavus.
