St. Catherine scores 3-0 sweep of Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS (10/11/02) -- Amy Lipetzky (So., Springfield, Minn.) had 22 kills, hitting .410, leading the College of St. Catherine to a three-game sweep of host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match Friday night at Si Melby Hall. Game scores were 30-28, 30-26, 30-26.

Lipetzky had six kills in the first game, seven kills in the second and nine in the third, while adding three service aces for the Wildcats, who improved to 3-12 overall and 1-6 in MIAC play. Augsburg drops to 2-15 overall and 1-6 in MIAC play, dropping its fifth match in a row. The match was the last at home for the Auggies this season.

Lipetzky's hitting sparked the Wildcats to a strong .209 game, converting 49 kills. Katie Jones (Jr., Alpha, Minn.) had six kills in hitting .385 with two blocks, while Andrea Schneider (Sr., Mission, S.D.) had seven kills and a game-high 20 digs.

The first game was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team leading by more than five points. Schneider closed the match with two kills and five in the first game for the Wildcats.

St. Catherine scored the first five points of the second game on a service run by Jones. After the Auggies cut the lead to 11-10, Schneider used a 5-0 service run to give the Wildcats a 16-11 lead. The Wildcats held the advantage the rest of the way, with Nancy Ruther (Jr., Monticello, Minn.) claiming four kills and Jones three.

Augsburg held a 10-6 advantage in the third game, but the Wildcats came back to tie the game at 11-11 and take the lead to stay on a 4-0 service run by Stacey Burns (So., Le Sueur, Minn.). Burns ended the match with 39 assists, four kills and four digs. Rachel Norberg (So., Redwood Falls, Minn.) had 10 digs.

Augsburg was paced by Lisa Miller (Sr., Hanover, Minn./Buffalo HS), who had 13 kills and two blocks. Denise Foster (Sr., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) had nine kills and nine digs, while Kristy Larson (So., Pine Island, Minn.) had six kills and two blocks (one solo).

Kelly Larvick (Sr., Good Thunder, Minn./Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial HS) had five kills, seven digs and five blocks (one solo), and Paula Pogatchnik (Sr., Finlayson, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) had five kills and four digs. Anna Piermantier (Jr., Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) had 29 assists and 16 digs, while Andrea Spiess (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./St. Bernard's HS) had eight digs.

Both teams return to MIAC action on Saturday (10/12) at 3 p.m, with Augsburg playing at St. Thomas and St. Catherine playing at St. Mary's.
