DULUTH, Minn. (11/26/02) --
Adam Kotewa (Sr., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) scored 14 points, hitting two 3-pointers, to lead Augsburg College to a 71-61 win over the College of St. Scholastica in a nonconference men's basketball game on Tuesday night at St. Scholastica.
Newcomers
Yarzue Slowon (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and
Marcus Gholson (Jr., Gary, Ind./William A. Wirt HS) added 13 points each for the Auggies, who remained unbeaten at 2-0. St. Scholastica, an NAIA school, drops to 0-2.
After giving up the first five points of the game, Augsburg rallied with a 14-1 run to take a lead it would never relinquish. After the Saints cut the lead to three points in the first three minutes of the second half, the Auggies pulled away again, leading by as many as 16 points down the stretch.
Augsburg hit 52 percent from the field (26-of-50) and hit 15-of-17 free throws to score the victory. Gholson had five rebounds, while Slowon added four rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Jay Howard * (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) scored 11 points and had five rebounds, three assists and two steals, while
Casey Zilka (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) had eight points, six rebounds and two steals. Nate Kerkhoff (Sr., Waconia, Minn.) had six points, five rebounds and six assists.
Scott Johnson led St. Scholastica with 17 points, while Chris Rauschenfels had 16 points, five rebounds and three steals. Mike Muckala had 10 points, five rebounds and three steals, and Matt Schiller had seven points and six rebounds.
Augsburg returns to action this weekend with a two-game tournament at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. Augsburg plays Grinnell (Iowa) on Friday (11/29) at 6 p.m., and play either Northwestern (Iowa) or Peru State (Neb.) on Saturday (11/30).
