Men's Basketball 12/4/02 -- Gustavus Adolphus 71, Augsburg 53

MINNEAPOLIS (12/4/02) -- Outrebounding the hosts by a 43-28 margin and taking advantage of 26 Augsburg College turnovers, Gustavus Adolphus College cruised to a 71-53 victory in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.
Tim Brown (So., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored 17 points and pulled down six rebounds to lead the Gusties, now 3-0 overall. Augsburg is now 3-2 overall. It was the first MIAC game for both teams.
Augsburg led just four times in the game during the first five minutes before the Gusties took the lead for good at 11-10 with 15:04 left on the first half. Gustavus outscored Augsburg 20-4 over the next 10 minutes to pull away. Hans Sviggum (Sr., Kenyon, Minn) had all seven of his points in the scoring run. He added four assists and three steals in the game.
Gustavus continued to pull away in the second half, leading by as many as 24 points down the stretch. The Gusties had 19 offensive rebounds in the game, four by Brett Boese (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and three by Chris TeBrake (Jr., St. Peter, Minn.). Both ended up with seven rebounds, TeBrake scoring eight points.
Derek Nelson (Sr., Lyle, Minn.) had 13 points, five rebounds and two steals, and David Newell (Sr., Dalton, Minn./Fergus HS) had 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Augsburg was paced by
Marcus Gholson (Jr., Gary, Ind./William A. Wirt HS), who had 12 points, four steals, two assists and four rebounds.
Adam Kotewa (Sr., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) scored 11 points, and
Jay Howard * (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) and
Yarzue Slowon (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) scored nine points apiece. Howard had five rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots, and Slowon added three assists.
Gustavus hit 42.6 percent from the field (26-of-61), while Augsburg was limited to 39.2 percent shooting (20-of-51), including just 2-for-17 from behind the three-point arc.
Both teams return to MIAC action on Saturday (12/7) at 3 p.m., with Augsburg playing at Carleton and Gustavus hosting Concordia-Moorhead
