NORTHFIELD, Minn. (12/7/02) -- Anthony Baquero (So., Rosemount, Minn.) scored a career-high 25 points, connecting on 7-of-9 three-pointers, as Carleton College rallied to beat Augsburg College, 77-67, in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Carleton's West Gym.
Dan Forkrud (Fr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Rosemount HS) posted career bests with 16 points and 10 rebounds, his first collegiate double-double. Scott Christensen (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) added 12 points and five assists for Carleton (3-2 overall, 2-0 MIAC).
Nate Kerkhoff (Sr., Waconia, Minn.) paced the Auggies (3-3 overall, 0-2 MIAC) with 16 points and nine rebounds.
Jay Howard * (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) added 15 points and 10 rebounds, as he canned 3-of-3 from three-point range.
Yarzue Slowon (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) was in double figures with 12 points, and added six rebounds and four assists.
Marcus Gholson (Jr., Gary, Ind./William A. Wirt HS) chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds for the visitors.
The Knights broke to an early 19-14 advantage, only to see the Auggies roar back behind consecutive Howard three-pointers to lead, 30-25. The Auggies led 38-32 at the break as Carleton shot a dismal 9-of-31 (29.0 percent) in the game's first 20 minutes.
Carleton scored the first five points of the second half and took the lead for with 14:27 left after a Gholson technical foul. Christensen canned both free throws to tie the game at 41-41 and Tanner Schieck (Jr., Austin, Minn.) scored on a put-back. Forkrud nailed a three-pointer following an Auggie turnover as the Knights opened the second half with a 22-6 spurt. The Auggies didn't get their first second-half field goal until
Adam Kotewa (Sr., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) nailed a three-pointer 7:06 into the second half; the Auggies made only four field goals in the first 17 minutes of the second half.
The Auggies tried to rally late, as Kotewa nailed a pair of three-pointers, bringing his team with six at 71-65 with 42 seconds remaining. During a free-throw line-up, Gholson picked up his second technical foul, and Christensen hit both foul shots and both technical-foul shots as Carleton held off the late Auggie rally.
Carleton shot a season-worst 34.3 percent from the floor (23-of-67), but converted a season-best 12 three-pointers. Augsburg shot 43.6 percent from the floor (24-of-55), but made only seven buckets from beyond the arc. The Auggies held a slim 44-41 edge on the glass, but turned the ball over 22 times, leading to 19 Carleton points off turnovers. The Knights had 13 turnovers.
Kyle Beste (So., St. Louis Park, Minn.) added eight points and matched his career high with 10 rebounds. Schieck chipped in with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Carleton steps out of conference to host Wisconsin-La Crosse on Monday (12/9) at 7:30 p.m. Augsburg hosts Macalester on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.
