MINNEAPOLIS (9/28/02) -- Lizzy Erickson (Jr., Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy HS) and Alivia Bryan (Fr., Eugene, Ore./Winston Churchill HS) had 10 kills apiece, leading Carleton College past host Augsburg College in a three-game sweep in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.
The Knights held off several Augsburg rallies to claim the sweep and improve to 12-4 overall, 3-1 in MIAC play. Augsburg dropped to 2-12 overall and 1-3 in the MIAC. Game scores were 30-22, 30-27 and 30-27.
Carleton hit a strong .350 in the first game, converting 16 kills -- five by Bryan -- to dominate in the win.
The second game was much closer, as neither team hit the ball well, with Carleton committing 10 attack errors en route to a .073 game, while Augsburg had 12 errors and just 10 kills, (minus-.043). Neither team led by more than three points in the second game. Emily Gottlieb (Sr., Seattle, Wash./The Bush School) and Sarah Barrow (So., Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) had four kills apiece for Carleton, while
Kristy Larson (So., Pine Island, Minn.) and
Linnea Evans (Fr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) scoring three kills each for Augsburg.
Kelly Larvick (Sr., Good Thunder, Minn./Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial HS) had four (one solo) of her match-high five blocks in the second game.
The Knights got back to business in the third game, hitting .200 with just five attack errors, but they could not shake the pesky Auggies. Carleton pulled out to leads of 5-1` and 19-11, but Augsburg rallied back to tie the game at 25-25 on a 6-1 scoring run, paced by two kills from
Lisa Miller (Sr., Hanover, Minn./Buffalo HS) cand a back-row kill from Larson. But tied at 27-27, Carleton closed the match for the win, taking advantage of Augsburg attack errors on the final two serves.
Bryan had three blocks for the Knights, while Erickson had two blocks. Gottlieb had nine kills and nine digs, while Barrow had six kills, six service aces and three blocks (one solo). Katie Freeman (So., Richfield, Minn.) had five kills and two blocks (one solo). Alyssa Honnette (Jr., Jackson, Minn./Jackson County Central HS) had 18 digs, and Katie Haldy (Jr., Broomfield, Colo.) had 31 assists and two blocks.
Augsburg was led by Larson, who had nine kills, three aces and four blocks. Larvick had eight kills and five blocks (one solo),
Denise Foster (Sr., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) had seven kills, 10 digs, three blocks and three service aces, while Evans had seven kills, two service aces and 10 digs. Miller had six kills and three blocks.
Anna Piermantier (Jr., Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) had 17 digs and 29 assists.
Both teams return to MIAC action on Wednesday (10/2) at 7:30 p.m, with Augsburg playing at Gustavus and Carleton hosting St. Thomas.
