Women's Soccer 9/4/02 -- St. Thomas 1, Augsburg 0

BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS (9/4/02) -- Tessie Thompson (Sr., West. St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) scored off a turnover in the 85th minute, the only goal the University of St. Thomas would need in claiming a 1-0 win over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer match Wednesday night at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

St. Thomas outshot Augsburg by an amazing 31-0 margin and had 10 corner kicks to Augsburg's 0, as the Tommies controlled the action for virtually the entire game in improving to 1-1 on the season. Augsburg drops to 2-1 overall. It was the first MIAC contest for both teams.

Augsburg goalkeeper Laura Hoffman * (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) had one of the best performances of her career in making 17 saves, nearly scoring her third straight shutout to open the season. However, St. Thomas' goal with 5:47 left in the second half ended hopes of another notch in Hoffman's ledger.

Thompson took the ball off a turnover and shot from the top of the box to the upper right corner past Hoffman on the Tommies' 29th shot of the game. It was Thompson's ninth shot of the contest. Christine Williams (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.) and Mary Dienhart (So., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had five shots apiece.

Jessica Christopherson (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) did not have to face a shot in picking up the shutout win in goal for St. Thomas.

Augsburg returns to action next Tuesday (9/10) at 7:30 p.m. with a MIAC contest at Macalester. St. Thomas returns to action Sept. 6-7 at the Ohio Tournament.
