Losing streak is over! Auggies net first MIAC win, 62-58 over Hamline!

ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/8/03) -- Sophomore point guard Yarzue Slowon's (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) 15-foot fadeaway with nine seconds remaining in the contest broke a 58-58 tie and gave visiting Augsburg College a 62-58 win over Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at Hutton Arena.

Slowon took the ball at the point, dribbled to his right past Jerome Williams where he met center Paul Meunchow. The sophomore was undercut by Muenchow fell to his right and through up a shot as he was falling to the court. Muenchow was called for a foul, and Slowon completed the three-point play.

Augsburg snapped a seven-game losing streak to improve to 4-8 overall, claiming its first conference win (1-8 MIAC). Slowon's 14 points led the Auggies. He also added five rebounds and four assists. Rob Collins (Jr., Richfield, Minn.) tallied 13 points, all in the second half, to go with six rebounds.

Marcus Gholson (Jr., Gary, Ind./William A. Wirt HS) scored 10 points and led the Auggies with seven rebounds. Jay Howard * (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) had 11 points and four rebounds.

The Pipers (5-6 overall, 1-5 MIAC) were down for most of the game without their top two scorers, Josh Hanson and Tyler Petrich, but sophomore Brandon Aukes' leaner with 37 seconds remaining in the contest tied the score at 58-58.

Muenchow and sophomore forward Justin Zygmunt each scored 11 points for the Pipers. Zygmunt's 11 came on 3-of-5 shooting was a career-high. Sophomore forward Luke Sturm added 10 points. Freshman Ryan Montgomery chipped in eight in just his second career game.

The Auggies led by as many as seven points in the first half and held a 23-19 advantage at the break. Augsburg pulled ahead by eight points in the second half, but Hamline used an 11-4, five-minute run to tie the game at 58-58. Augsburg outrebounded Hamline 32-25, and converted 11-of-14 free throws, compared to 7-of-13 for Hamline.

Both teams return to MIAC action on Saturday (1/11) at 3 p.m. Augsburg hosts St. Olaf at Si Melby Hall, while Hamline hosts Carleton.
