ST. PAUL, Minn. (9/27/03) -- The University of St. Thomas women's soccer team ran its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference unbeaten streak to 17 with Wednesday's 3-1 victory over visiting Augsburg College in MIAC play on the Tommies' field.
St. Thomas (6-3-1 overall, 4-0 MIAC) outshot Augsburg (6-3-1 overall, 3-2-1 MIAC) 24-13 and had a 14-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Tommies took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute on Maggie Curran's goal (assisted by Mary Dienhart).
Augsburg missed a great chance in the 37th minute, when a point-blank shot hit the left goal post. The Tommies answered a moment later for a 2-0 lead on Jessica Magnuson's goal (assisted by Jenny Murray). Augsburg responded with a flurry but hit the crossbar twice in a one-minute span and still trailed 2-0 at halftime.
The Auggies pulled within 2-1 on a goal by freshman
Emily Anderson (Fr., Hudson, Wis.), assisted by
Leah Vasquez (So., St. Louis Park, Minn.) in the 64th minute. Dienhart scored a big insurance goal for St. Thomas in the 73rd minute (assisted by Murray) for a two-goal lead.
Jessica Christopherson had six saves in goal for the Tommies, while
Laura Hoffman (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) had 16 saves for the Auggies.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday (10/4), with a 7:30 p.m. home game against St. Catherine at Edor Nelson Field. The Tommies are off until next Wednesday (10/8) when they host Macalester. The Scots lost their first MIAC game in two years Wednesday, a 1-0 decision at Concordia.
