Hamline tops Augsburg in four games

ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/8/03) -- Senior outside hitter Laura Fleischman paced Hamline University with 19 kills to lead the Pipers to a 3-1 victory over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match Wednesday night at Hutton Arena.

The Pipers disposed of the Auggies, 30-13, 30-18, 25-30, 30-15 to earn their first conference win of the season. Hamline improved their record to 10-8, 1-5 in the MIAC. Augsburg dipped to 2-16, 0-6 in conference. Augsburg has lost its last 15 MIAC matches in a row, dating back to last season.

Fleischman hit .271 for the game with 19 kills and six errors in 48 attempts. Dana Luiken added 14 kills in 22 attempts. Amanda Jones tallied eight kills and served five aces. Senior setter Emily Peterson dished out 42 assists for the Pipers.

After the Pipers jumped on Augsburg in the first two games, the Auggies rallied to take game three, converting 14 kills while taking advantage of eight attack errors by Hamline.

But the Pipers would storm back in the fourth game. Tied at 1-1, the Pipers rattled off six points on the serve of Melissa O'Malley. Fleischman hammered down two kills during the spurt and the Auggies couldn't recover.

As a team, Augsburg hit just .056 -- 39 kills and 32 errors in 126 attempts. Meanwhile, Hamline hit .283 as a team -- 54 kills and 18 errors in 127 attempts. Hamline also converted 10 team blocks to Augsburg's eight, and had 13 service aces to Augsburg eight.

Britt Bogner (So., Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) led Augsburg with 12 kills, hitting .206. She also had a match-high 14 digs. Linnea Evans (So., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) added 11 kills, 14 digs and seven service aces -- a season-high aces total for Augsburg.

Elsie Ginsberg (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) had seven kills and six blocks for the Auggies, with Billie Painschab (So., Howard Lake, Minn./Howard Lake-Waverly HS) contributing five blocks. Alexis Johnson (So., Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) had 28 assists.

Both teams are back in action next Wednesday (10/15) at 7:30 p.m. in MIAC play. Augsburg plays at Gustavus, while Hamline hosts St. Benedict.
