Men's Basketball 11/22/03 -- St. Scholastica 63, Augsburg 59

DULUTH, Minn. (11/22/03) --
Lucas Olson-Patterson (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) scored 21 points and his Augsburg College men's basketball team hit 46.2 percent from the field, but the host College of St. Scholastica got the better of the Auggies with a 63-59 win in the championship game of the CSS Wells Fargo Basketball Shootout, held at the Reif Recreation Center on Saturday night.
Kevin Keto (Fr., Forest Lake, Minn.) had 10 points, six assists and two steals for the Auggies, now 1-1 on the season. Keto earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team, along with teammate
Casey Zilka (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.), who was limited to two points against St. Scholastica, but had nine rebounds.
A 9-0 run midway through the first half gave St. Scholastica a 21-13 advantage, a lead stretched to nine points, 40-31, at halftime.
Augsburg used a scoring run of its own to eventually tie the game at 50-50 with 8:21 remaining in the second half. After trailing again by five, Augsburg rallied to tie the game at 55-55 with 5:08 left, but the Saints outscored the Auggies 8-4 the rest of the way, going 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in the final 1:02. Augsburg went 1-of-5 from the field in the final 5:08 and turned the ball over twice.
David Kapaun led the Saints with 14 points, hitting four 3-pointers. Jeremy Grev added 12 points and five assists. Matt Inda and Chris Rauschenfels had eight points apiece, and both were named to the All-Tournament Team. Rauschenfels had seven rebounds. Taylor Roscoe had seven points and five rebounds. Josh Gosar had five points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Grant Hemmingsen (So., New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View HS) had nine points and three assists for the Auggies, while Larry Burgess (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./North HS) had eight points and seven rebounds.
Augsburg hit just 3-of-15 from beyond the three-point arc and 8-of-13 from free-throw range. Meanwhile, St. Scholastica went 9-for-29 from three-point range and 12-of-14 at the free-throw line.
Augsburg returns to action on Tuesday (11/25) with a nonconference game at Crown College in St. Bonifacius, Minn. Game time is 7 p.m.
