Carleton pulls away from Augsburg in 68-51 decision.

MINNEAPOLIS (12/6/03) -- Kyle Beste (Jr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) scored 15 points to lead all scorers, as Carleton College pulled away with two big scoring runs to dispatch host Augsburg College 68-51 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

The victory earned Carleton head coach Guy Kalland his 250th career victory. Kalland, in his 20th season of coaching at Carleton, is now 250-233 on his career.

Dan Forkrud (So., Rosemount, Minn.) hit two 3-pointers and had 14 points, and Kahlid Lakanwal (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had three 3-pointers and scored 11 points, as Carleton improved to 4-1 overall, 2-0 in MIAC play. Augsburg dropped its second straight game to fall to 2-3 overall, 0-2 in MIAC play.

Carleton took advantage of 16 Augsburg turnovers, scoring 22 points off the miscues. The Knights also made the most of their frequent trips to the free-throw line, as Augsburg was whistled for 26 fouls compared to Carleton's 12. Carleton hit 19-of-25 at the free-throw line, while Augsburg could only net three free throws in seven attempts.

Trailing 18-15 with 7:30 left in the first half, Carleton went on a 19-6 run to close the period, taking a 34-24 lead into the locker room, a lead the Knights would never relinquish. Forkrud had seven points in the run, while Beste had six points.

A quick 6-0 Augsburg run, with four points from Marcus "Rico" Gholson (Sr., Gary, Ind./William A. Wirt HS) cut the lead to its closest margin in the second half, four points (34-30 with 17:16 left).

But Carleton scored the next 15 points of the ballgame in a 3:15 span, all on three-pointers from five different players -- Lakanwal, Mike Kootsikas (Fr., Rosemount, Minn.), Micah Johnson (Jr., Pine River, Minn./Pine River-Backus HS), Jake Phillips (Fr., Brainerd, Minn.) and Forkrud, as the Knights took a commanding 49-30 lead with 14:01 left. The Knights' lead never dipped below 13 points the rest of the way.

Tanner Schieck (Sr., Austin, Minn.) had seven points and team highs of nine rebounds, four assists and three steals for the Knights. Anthony Baquero (Jr., Rosemount, Minn.) had seven points.

Augsburg was led by Larry Burgess (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./North HS), who had 14 points and three steals, his season-high point total in his first Auggie campaign. Gholson had eight points and three assists, Grant Hemmingsen (So., New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View HS) had six points and a team-high five rebounds, and Casey Zilka (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) had five points and four rebounds.

Augsburg hit just 2-of-14 (14.3 percent) from three-point range, while Carleton hit 9-of-18 (50 percent). Augsburg outrebounded Carleton by a 38-35 margin.

Both teams return to action on Monday (12/8) at 7:30 p.m., with Augsburg playing at Macalester in MIAC action, while Carleton visits Crown in nonconference play.
