Macalester scores three-game sweep of Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS (9/27/03) -- Maggie Buttermore (So., Lincoln, Neb./East HS) had 11 kills and four service aces, leading Macalester College to a three-game sweep of host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.

Game scores were 30-14, 30-20, 30-16 in favor of the Scots, who improved to 11-5 overall and 2-2 in MIAC play. Augsburg drops to 2-14 overall and 0-4 in MIAC play.

Macalester dominated the match from start to finish, committing just 12 attack errors in 106 attempts, converting 46 kills for a .321 hitting percentage. Meanwhile, Augsburg had just 30 kills and 22 errors in 106 attempts for a .075 percentage.

The first game was a microcosm of the entire match. Macalester hit .500 -- 13 kills and just one error in 24 attempts -- while Augsburg hit .000 -- 10 kills and 10 errors in 34 attempts. Macalester built a 16-7 lead and cruised from there. Buttermore had four kills to lead the Scots.

Macalester built a 15-7 lead in the second game and withstood a five-point Auggie rally late in the game. Butermore, Carley Bomstad (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) and Sarah Graves (Sr., Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State HS) had four kills apiece, with Graves and Bomstad adding two blocks each.

Another early run for Macalester, a 10-3 sprint, gave the Scots the early lead. But Augsburg was able to cut the lead to two points, 14-12, behind two kills by Kristy Larson (Jr., Pine Island, Minn.) and four attack errors by Macalester. The Scots, however, slammed the door on an Auggie rally with a 16-4 run to close the mach.

Bethany Tate (Jr., Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park HS) had five kills in the third game, nine in the match for the Scots. Bomstad had 10 kills and a team-high four blocks (one solo). Setter Graves had six kills and two blocks in the match to go with a match-high 30 assists. May Lin Kessenich (Jr., Milford, Conn./Foran HS) had 17 digs.

Augsburg was paced by Elsie Ginsberg (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Central HS), who had 10 kills and three blocks. Larson had seven kills and a block, and Bri Simon (Fr., Hayfield, Minn.) had seven kills and 10 digs. Britt Bogner (So., Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) had four kills and 10 digs, and Billie Painschab (So., Howard Lake, Minn./Howard Lake-Waverly HS) had two blocks and two service aces.

Alexis Johnson (So., Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) had 20 assists and six digs, with Anna Piermantier (Sr., Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) adding eight assists.

Both teams return to MIAC play on Wednesaday (10/1) at 7:30 p.m., with Augsburg hosting St. Olaf at Si Melby Hall, and Macalester hosting Carleton.
