Poor shooting hampers Auggies in 84-52 loss at Carleton.

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (1/24/04) -- Tanner Schieck (Sr., Austin, Minn.) scored 22 points, including 19 in the first half, as host Carleton College shot 58 percent from the floor and nailed 11-of-21 three-point shots in beating Augsburg College, 84-52, in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Carleton's West Gym.

Schieck, whose first-half point total matched that of Augsburg's entire team, hit his first six shots, capped by a three-pointer that gave the Knights (11-6, 8-4 MIAC) a 24-10 lead less than nine minutes into the contest. From that point, the Knights closed the half on a 20-9 spurt to lead 44-19 at the break.

Schieck was 10-for-15 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the line. He grabbed four rebounds and added four assists and three steals. It was the fourth time this season and 11th time in his career he's scored 20 or more points in a game.

Carleton, the nation's second-ranked scoring defense, limited the Auggies to 36 percent shooting, including just 1-for-19 (5.3 percent) from three-point range. The visitors missed on their first 17 shots from long-range as Carleton led by as many as 39 points in beating the Auggies (6-11, 3-9 MIAC) for the fourth consecutive time at West Gym.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Carleton. The Auggies lost for the third consecutive time and for the eighth time in the last nine games.

Dan Forkrud (So., Rosemount, Minn.) tallied 14 points and seven rebounds and Micah Johnson (Jr., Pine River, Minn./Pine River-Backus HS) matched his career-high with 12 points off the bench for Carleton. Anthony Baquero (Jr., Rosemount, Minn.) was also in double figures with 11 points, draining 3-of-4 from three-point range.

Jonathan Gholson (So., Gary, Ind./William A. Wirt HS) was the lone Auggie in double figures with 10 points, adding four assists. Yarzue Slowon (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had eight points and two steals, and Josh Klem (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul HS) had seven points. Lucas Olson-Patterson (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) and Larry Burgess (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./North HS) scored six points apiece.

Augsburg returns to MIAC action on Wednesday (1/28), hosting Macalester at 7:30 p.m. at Si Melby Hall. Carleton hosts St. Olaf on Saturday (1/31) at 3 p.m.
