MINNEAPOLIS (10/21/04) --
Emily Anderson (So., Hudson, Wis.) scored two first-half goals from
Mitra Rahimi (Fr., Eden Prairie, Minn.), all the scoring Augsburg College would need in a 2-1 victory over Martin Luther College in a nonconference women's soccer game Thursday evening at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Anderson scored on a header off of Rahimi's corner kick just 81 seconds into the game, then scored on a move around a defender in the penalty box from a midfield feed by Rahimi in the 38th minute to lift the Auggies to the win, improving to 9-6-0 on the season. Martin Luther drops to 8-8-0 on the year.
Augsburg outshot Martin Luther by a 16-3 margin and held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks in the first half, en route to advantages of 24-10 and 8-2, respectively.
With a lineup made up mostly of younger reserves in the second half, Augsburg held firm on defense, as Martin Luther outshot Augsburg by an 8-7 margin in the frame.
The Knights cut into the lead in the 59th minute, as Jenni Mueller (So., Livermore, Calif.) found the ball behind the goalkeeper on a corner kick by Christianne Wehrenberg (Fr., Apple Valley, Minn.) and deposited it in the net.
Rachel Wehrenberg (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.) made 11 saves for Martin Luther, while
Liz Osterman (Fr., Lincoln, Neb./Southeast HS) made five saves for Augsburg, all in the second half.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with its final home game of the regular season against Carleton on Saturday (10/23) at 6 p.m. (a time change from previously published schedules).
Martin Luther has completed its regular season and will play in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference playoffs next Frday (10/29) at 12 p.m., against Minnesota-Morris at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
