SUPERIOR, Wis. (11/19/04) -- Jeremy Grev scored 14 points to lead all scorers, and teammate David Kapaun hit the game-winning field goal with 17 seconds remaining, as the College of St. Scholastica rallied from a 17-point second-half deficit to score a 58-57 win over Augsburg College in a Perkins Tip-Off Classic men's basketball contest on Friday night at the University of Wisconsin-Superior's Gates Gymnasium.
It was the season-opening game for both teams. Augsburg will face Finlandia University (Mich.) in the third-place game on Saturday (11/20) at 1 p.m., while St. Scholastica will face Twin Ports rival Wisconsin-Superior in the championship game on Saturday at 3 p.m. Tournament host Wisconsin-Superior defeated Finlandia 94-56 in the other tournament game on Friday night.
Augsburg built a 28-16 halftime lead, and stretched the lead to 40-23 with 15:15 remaining in the contest. Augsburg led 53-40 with 7:03 left, but an 18-4 run by the Saints down the stretch stole the win away from the Auggies.
Grev scored eight points in the final 18-4 run, including three-pointers with 6:41 left and 3:51 remaining, which cut the lead to 55-54.
Kevin Keto (So., Forest Lake, Minn.) hit two free throws with 3:19 left to give the Auggies a 57-54 lead, but the Auggies turned the ball over on their next possession, and Grev was fouled and hit two free throws with 2:39 left to trim the Auggie lead again to one point, 57-56.
Augsburg missed shots on its next three possessions, while St. Scholastica missed a shot and turned the ball over. But on the Saints' final possession, Kapaun connected on a jumper to give the Saints their first lead since a 4-2 advantage in the first two minutes of play.
Jonathan Gholson (Jr., Gary, Ind./William A. Wirt HS) led the Auggies with 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while
Lucas Olson-Patterson (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) had 11 points, seven rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots.
Zac Rosen (Sr., Plymouth, Minn./West Lutheran HS) had six points, two blocks and a team-high nine rebounds.
Grev had three steals to go with his 14 points for the Saints, while Luke Schramm had 10 points, Roscoe Taylor had eight points and five rebounds, and Josh Gosar had five points, seven assists and nine rebounds.
