Carleton wins 11th match in a row, drops Augsburg in three games

MINNEAPOLIS (9/24/04) -- Danielle Hargreaves (So., Brandon, Manitoba/Vincent Massey Collegiate HS) had a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs, hitting .310 to lead her Carleton College volleyball team to its 11th victory in a row, a three-game sweep of host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match Friday night at Si Melby Hall.

Carleton, ranked No. 27 in the latest AVCA Division III national poll, won by scores of 30-17, 30-24, 30-24 to improve to 14-1 overall, 3-0 in MIAC play. In addition to 11 match victories in a row, Carleton has now won 21 straight games in those matches. Augsburg drops to 7-8 overall, 0-3 in MIAC play.

Beth Freeman (Sr., Richfield, Minn.) hit .500, with 11 kills and only two errors in 18 attempts, while contributing four service aces and four blocks (one solo) for the Knights, who hit .281 as a team (51 kills, 17 errors in 121 attempts). Katie Freeman (Sr., Richfield, Minn.) contributed 12 kills, nine digs and two blocks.

Augsburg was paced by Linnea Evans * (Jr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS), who had eight kills and 10 digs. Kristy Larson * (Sr., Pine Island, Minn.) and Sarah Bradley (Fr., International Falls, Minn. had seven kills each, with Bradley contributing seven digs and a block.

A 12-2 scoring run in the first game, keyed by three kills from Beth Freeman and two kills from Katie Freeman, enabled the Knights to pull away to a 20-10 lead and cruise to the first game win. Katie Freeman had seven kills in the first game, hitting .429. As a team, the Knights hit .378 in the first game, wtih 16 kills and just two errors in 37 attacks.

Another 12-2 run in the second game, again starting from an 8-8 tie, gave the Knights another 20-10 lead, though the Augies eventually trimmed the advantage to 28-21. But the Auggies hurt themselves in the second game, committing 11 attack errors and hitting minus-.024 (10 kills, 11 errors in 42 attempts). Hargreaves had five kills for the Knights in the second game, as did Alivia Bryan (Jr., Eugene, Ore./Winston Churchill HS). Bryan had nine kills and two blocks in the match.

Augsburg took one of its few leads of the match in the third game, leading 12-9 at one point behind three early kills from Larson. But the Knights rallied to take the lead, taking the lead for good at 19-18. An 8-3 run closed the match. Hargreaves had six kills and hit .400 for the Knights in the third game, while Beth Freeman hit .500 and had five kills. Augsburg's Evans had five kills and no errors among nine attempts in the third game, hitting .556.

Heather La Chapelle (Fr., Eagan, Minn.) had 39 assists and eight digs for the Knights, while libero Jamie Lykken (Jr., Edina, Minn.) had 16 digs.

Alexis Johnson (Jr., Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) had 30 assists and five digs for the Auggies, while Britt Bogner (Jr., Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) contributed five kills and 13 digs. Libero Tina Quick (Fr., Blaine, Minn./Centennial HS) had nine digs, and Billie Painschab (Jr., Howard Lake, Minn./Howard Lake-Waverly HS) had five kills and two blocks.

Both teams are back in action with MIAC road matches on Saturday (9/25) at 3 p.m. Augsburg will play at Macalester, while Carleton will play at St. Catherine.
