MINNEAPOLIS (10/26/05) -- Jenna Iaizzo (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored for Gustavus Adolphus College in the 22nd minute, and Tori Boughton (Sr., Edina, Minn.) made 12 saves in goal for her fourth shutout of the season, as Gustavus beat host Augsburg College 1-0 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game on Wednesday night at Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg outshot Gustavus by a 19-14 margin, but Boughton kept the visitors' lead secure by making six saves in each period. Augsburg also held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks, including a 4-1 advantage in the second half, but could not convert the tying goal.
Gustavus won its second straight game in improving to 6-10-1 overall, 3-6-1 in MIAC play. Augsburg fell to 8-2-6 overall, 5-2-3 in MIAC play. Augsburg has won just one game in its last five starts (1-2-2), and has now been shut out in its last two games.
With the loss, Augsburg is now in a challenging situation in its hopes of qualifying for the four-team MIAC postseason playoffs for the second straight year. Macalester (10-0-1 MIAC, 21 points) has already clinched the regular-season MIAC title and top seed in the playoffs, but four teams are in the running for the final three playoff spots, with two key meetings in the final games of the regular season on Saturday (10/29).
Concordia is in second place with 16 league points (8-2-0 MIAC), after beating St. Catherine 2-0 on Wednesday. St. Thomas (14 points, 7-3-0 MIAC) moved into a third-place tie with St. Benedict (14 points, 7-3-0 MIAC) with a 1-0 win over St. Benedict on Wednesday, leaving Augsburg in fifth place in the league standings with 13 points (5-2-3). On Saturday at 1 p.m., Augsburg will play at St. Thomas, and Concordia will host St. Benedict.
Gustavus took the lead against Augsburg in the 22nd minute, as Iaizzo scored her third goal of the season on a curving shot from 30 yards out. Liz Peterson (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.) assisted on the goal.
Boughton faced 12 Augsburg shots on goal and stopped them all to record the win.
Emily Anderson * (Jr., Hudson, Wis.) had nine shots for Augsburg, including seven on goal and one that hit the crossbar in the 32nd minute.
Millie Suk * (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and
Aili Brom-Palkowski (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) had three shots for the Auggies.
Iaizzo, Samantha Engh (Sr., Wayzata, Minn.), Amy Larson (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Holy Angels HS) and Christine Tupy (Fr., Eagan, Minn./Burnsville HS) had three shots each for Gustavus.
