Augsburg picks up first MIAC victory with three-game home sweep of St. Catherine

MINNEAPOLIS (10/5/05) -- Linnea Evans * (Sr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) finished one kill away from a triple-double, with nine kills, 17 assists and 16 digs, as Augsburg College broke an 11-match losing streak with a three-game sweep of the College of St. Catherine in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.

Augsburg claimed the victory by scores of 30-26, 30-26, 31-29 to improve to 3-17 overall, 1-5 in MIAC play. St. Catherine is now 3-14 overall, 0-5 in MIAC play.

Sarah Bradley (So., International Falls, Minn.) recorded 13 kills, eight digs and four service aces for the Auggies, while Katie LaGrave (So., Okinawa, Japan/Kadena HS) had 12 kills and two blocks (one solo). Alexis Johnson (Sr., Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) recorded a double-double with 21 assists and 12 digs, and libero Haley Bower (So., Brainerd, Minn.) recorded 25 digs, her fourth 20-plus-dig performance of the season.

St. Catherine was paced by Emily Van Hon (So., Fairfax, Minn./G-F-W HS), who had 13 kills and 13 digs. Nicole Haase (Jr., Bertha, Minn./Bertha-Hewitt HS) had 10 kills, nine digs and five blocks, while Erika Kriechbaum (Fr., Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy HS) had 18 digs. Whitney Sparby (Fr., Red Wing, Minn.) had 30 assists, Bridget Holman (Jr., Springfield, Minn.) had 11 digs and Erin Aker (Jr., Perham, Minn./New York Mills HS) had four blocks (two solo).

Bradley led the Auggies with five kills and a .625 attack percentage in the first game, as the Auggies ran off to leads of 14-7 and 25-15 en route to the victory. LaGrave had four kills and hit .571 in the second game, adding a block as the Auggies rallied from an early 13-9 deficit to tie the game at 16-16. Bradley and Johnson had two service aces each in the second game, with Evans adding an ace to give the Auggies a 23-20 lead.

Augsburg rallied from a 29-26 deficit and three Wildcat game points in the third game to clinch the match. With Evans serving, Augsburg took advantage of two St. Catherine attack errors and kills from Billie Painschab * (Sr., Howard Lake, Minn./Howard Lake-Waverly HS) and Britt Bogner (Sr., Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) on the final two points to close the game and match.

Bradley had five kills in the third game, with Bogner and LaGrave adding four kills apiece. Haase had four kills, three blocks and six digs in the third game for the Wildcats, with Van Hon adding four kills.

Both Augsburg and St. Catherine will compete at the Wisconsin-Superior Jacket Classic on Friday and Saturday (10/7-8) in Superior, Wis.
