Men's Basketball 11/25-26/05 -- Augsburg at David Wells Classic (California)

CLAREMONT, Calif. (11/25-26/05) -- The Augsburg College men's basketball team went 0-2 in games over the Thanksgiving weekend break at the David Wells Classic basketball tournament in the Los Angeles suburb of Claremont. On Friday, Augsburg fell 69-52 at Pomona-Pitzer (Calif.), then dropped a 71-57 decision at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.) on Saturday.
Against Pomona-Pitzer,
Kevin Keto (Jr., Forest Lake, Minn.) led the way for the Auggies with 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Zeph Jones (Sr., Flint, Mich./Flint Central HS) had 10 points, five rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.
Justin Kozlowski (So., Wausau, Wis./Wausau Newman HS) had nine points.
The Auggies fell behind by six points early in the game, but rallied to tie the game at 28-28 just before halftime. The host Sagehens led 31-28 at halftime, and used an 18-6 run over a five-minute span to take a commanding 61-45 lead with 4:24 left. The advantage did not dip below 11 points the rest of the way. Augsburg was limited to just 30.2 percent shooting (19-of-63) from the field, including just 17.4 percent (4-of-23) from three-point range.
David Knowles led Pomona-Pitzer with 25 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Ed Wexler-Beron had 10 points and nine rebounds. Thomas Hollo had nine points and seven rebounds.
Against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, a 13-3 first-half run gave the host Stags a 14-point lead, 30-16 with 2:29 remaining in the frame, and the advantage never dipped below double-figures the rest of the way. CMS led by as many as 25 points in the second half.
Kozlowski scored 14 points to lead Augsburg, one of four Auggies to score in double figures. Jones had 12 points, five rebounds and three steals; Keto had 11 points, and Matthew Huttner (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn./Rosemount HS) scored 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Augsburg again was limited from the field, hitting just 35.3 percent (18-of-51) of its field goals, including 27.8 percent (5-of-18) from beyond the three-point arc.
John Parsons led CMS with 16 points, while Emanuel Maceira had 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists, and Chaz Turner scored 11 points.
Augsburg, now 1-2 overall, opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday (11/30), hosting St. Olaf as part of a doubleheader at Si Melby Hall. The women's game is at 5:45 p.m., with the men's game to follow at 8 p.m.
