Augsburg drops MIAC opener at 17th-ranked Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (9/14/05) -- Vanessa Brown (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) and Jessica Black (Sr., Greenwood Village, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) tallied 10 kills each as the 17th-ranked Carleton College volleyball team opened its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season by defeating Augsburg College in three games, 30-22, 30-21, 30-20.

Black added 14 digs for her double-double of the year for the Knights (8-1, 1-0 MIAC), who have now won 30 of their last 34 matches, dating back to last season.

Dani Boner (Fr., Omaha, Neb./Mercy HS) paced Augsburg (2-8, 0-1 MIAC) with eight kills and 10 digs. Billie Painschab * (Sr., Howard Lake, Minn./Howard Lake-Waverly HS) and Kristina Lurken (So., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) added six kills each for the Auggies, who hit .074 in the match with 33 kills and 24 errors.

Linnea Evans * (Sr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) and Alexis Johnson (Sr., Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) had 10 assists apiece for the Auggies, with Evans contributing nine digs and Johnson contributing eight. Haley Bower (So., Brainerd, Minn.) added 11 digs.

Heather La Chapelle (So., Eagan, Minn.) led the Knights with 26 assists and Jamie Lykken (Sr., Edina, Minn.) led all players with 19 digs. Sarah Kunelius (Fr., Eagan, Minn.) tallied seven kills, three aces and two blocks for Carleton and Alivia Bryan (Sr., Eugene, Ore./Winston Churchill HS) chipped in with eight kills ad two blocks. Lykken and Kelsey Holmes (Jr., Brownsburg, Ind.) tallied three aces each as well.

Carleton took control of game one early, breaking to an 11-5 lead off kills from Black and Kunelius. The Knights stretched the lead to 24-14 on a Black ace and closed out the game on a Brown kill shot and Auggie error.

Game two was a bit tighter, but the Knights broke from a 10-10 tie to lead 15-10 on kills from Black and Bryan and consecutive aces from Lykken. A Boner ace pulled the visitors within one at 16-15, but three straight Auggie attack errors and a Kunelius kill shot put Carleton ahead 20-16. The Knights eventually won the game as Heather La Chapelle served up an ace and Bryan closed out the Auggies with consecutive kills.

Game three saw the Knights get out to an early lead, but the Auggies hung around, getting within 21-17. Kunelius tallied two kills and two Auggie errors pushed the score to 25-18, with a Megan La Chapelle (Fr., Eagan, Minn.) kill and Brown kill shot ending the game and the match.

The Knights, who hit only .163 for the match, did serve up 12 aces and had only four serving errors themselves.

Carleton begins a crucial stretch early in the conference season when it hosts fellow nationally-ranked College of St. Benedict on Saturday (9/17) at 3 p.m. at West Gym. Augsburg travels to Illinois to compete at the University of Chicago Invitational on Friday (9/16) and Saturday.
