Augsburg falls 3-2 to St. Catherine

ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/4/06) -- Playing its fourth 5-game match in its last six Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball matches, Augsburg College rallied from a two-game deficit, but could not hang on in a 3-2 loss to the College of St. Catherine on Wednesday night at CSC's Butler Center.

Game scores were 31-29, 30-28, 15-30, 23-30, 15-6 in favor of the Wildcats, now 7-14 overall, 1-5 in MIAC play. Augsburg is now 7-13 overall, 1-6 in MIAC play.

Dani Boner (So., Omaha, Neb./Mercy HS) recorded her seventh kill-dig double-double of the season for the Auggies, notching 14 kills to go along with 17 digs, adding two service aces.

Katie LaGrave (Jr., Okinawa, Japan/Kadena HS) and Barbara Simmons (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) claimed 16 kills apiece for the Auggies. LaGrave recorded her 15th double-digit kill match of the season, while Simmons notched her third straight double-digit kill mach and her fifth of the season with her season-high 16 kills. Simmons added four blocks, while LaGrave had two blocks.

Julie Jenkins (So., Edina, Minn.) had 37 assists, seven kills and eight digs, while Shanna Reed (Fr., Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels HS) collected 23 assists, seven digs and two service aces. Haley Bower (Jr., Brainerd, Minn.) had 38 digs and Dani Tanaka (Fr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had 11 digs. Kristina Lurken (Jr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) had eight kills and two blocks.

St. Catherine was paced by Maria Hoffman, who had 17 kills, 12 digs and three blocks. Brooke Salonek had 11 kills and three blocks (one solo), adn Kayla Reed had 10 kills. Whitney Sparby had 37 assists and 10 digs, and Erika Kriechbaum had 29 digs.

Both teams are off until next Wednesday (10/11) at 7 p.m., as Augsburg hosts St. Mary's and St. Catherine hosts St. Olaf.
