Women's Soccer 9/12/06 -- Augsburg 1, St. Olaf 0
BOXSCORE
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (9/12/06) --
Aili Brom-Palkowski * (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) scored for Augsburg College with just over four minutes to play to give the Auggies a 1-0 victory over host St. Olaf College in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer opener for both teams on Tuesday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
After a scoreless first half, the game seemed to be headed towards overtime until Brom-Palkowsi's goal at the 85:48 mark. The loss was the first of the season for St. Olaf.
"Normally I prefer not to highlight individuals as our whole team contributes every game. However, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge Aili's goal today -- it was one of the best strikes I've ever seen," said Augsburg head coach
Mike Navarre.
The Oles (3-1-0) had a slight advantage in shots, outshooting the Auggies (4-0-1) by a 14-12 margin.
"This was a great way to start the conference season," Navarre said. "We knew that it would be difficult to beat St. Olaf because they are a well-coached and organized team. I was proud that we kept our focus and were able to find a way to win."
Maggie DeGroot (So., Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) had 8 saves for Augsburg in recording her fifth straight shutout and 13th shutout of her career. Augsburg has yet to give up a goal this season, having now outscored its opponents by a 14-0 margin.
Augsburg has now held its opponents without a goal for 485 minutes, a streak including 470 minutes in four shutouts this season and 15 minutes from its last game of last season
Augsburg returns to action on Friday (9/15) at 7:30 p.m., hosting Hamline at Edor Nelson Field. St. Olaf next plays against St. Benedict on Saturday (9/16) at 1 p.m. in St. Joesph, Minn..
