Augsburg wins first game, but No. 16-ranked Carleton rallies for 3-1 match victory

MINNEAPOLIS (9/13/06) -- Danielle Hargreaves (Sr., Brandon, Manitoba/Vincent Massey Collegiate HS) recorded a double-double with 22 kills and 13 digs, leading Carleton College to a victory in four games over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.

Carleton, ranked No. 16 in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III national poll, improved to 7-3 overall with the victory, 23-30, 30-17, 30-26, 30-23. It was the first MIAC match for both Carleton and Augsburg.

Augsburg, now 5-5 overall, was paced by a double-double from Dani Boner (So., Omaha, Neb./Mercy HS), who had 10 kills and 11 digs, and Katie LaGrave (Jr., Okinawa, Japan/Kadena HS), who notched 16 kills with four blocks and six digs while hitting .405 (one error in 37 attempts).

The Auggies jumped out to the early advantage in the first game, taking a 15-7 lead behind three kills from LaGrave and two service aces by Kristina Lurken (Jr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS). LaGrave ended up with four kills in the first game, while Boner had three kills.

Carleton claimed five kills from Hargreaves and hit .343 as a team (16 kills and four errors in 35 attempts) to win the second game. The Knights used a 17-3 scoring run to rally from an early 11-6 deficit and take control of the second game, 23-14.

Hargreaves then hit .438 in the third game, with eight kills and just one error, to lead the Knights in the third game. Augsburg came back from a 16-10 deficit to cut the lead to 20-18, but Carleton pulled away late.

Five kills from Hargreaves and six kills from Sarah Kunelius (So., Eagan, Minn.) led the Knights to the final-game win, withstanding a six-kill, .545 hitting performance by Augsburg's LaGrave.

Julie Jenkins (So., Edina, Minn.) had 24 assiss, 15 digs, four blocks and five kills for the Auggies in the match, while Shanna Reed (Fr., Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels HS) had 21 assists. Barbara Simmons (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) collected four blocks (one solo), and Haley Bower (Jr., Brainerd, Minn.) had 27 digs in the match. Boner had three service aces, while Reed, Lurken and Bower had two service aces each.

Kunelius had 11 kills for the Knights in the match, while Megan La Chapelle (So., Eagan, Minn.) had nine kills, five service aces and 22 digs. Laura Barsness (Fr., Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) had 23 digs. Heather La Chapelle (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) had 31 assists and 14 digs, and Rachel Popielarz (Jr., Pacific Palisades, Calif./Marlborough HS) had 20 assists and 11 digs. Annie Eckhoff (Fr., Northfield, Minn.), Libby Ritz (Jr., Madison, Wis./West HS) and Kunelius had six blocks apiece.

Augsburg returns to MIAC action on Friday (9/15) at 7 p.m., hosting Bethel at Si Melby Hall. Carleton returns to action on Saturday (9/16) at 3 p.m. with an MIAC match at Concordia-Moorhead.
