MINNEAPOLIS (9/15/06) -- The beat goes on for the Augsburg College women's soccer team.
Claiming its sixth shutout, the Auggies remained unbeaten and unscored upon this season with a 2-0 triumph over visiting Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Friday night at Edor Nelson Field.
Emily Anderson * (Sr., Hudson, Wis.) scored for the Auggies two minutes into the second half, and
Angie Neuhaus (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) followed with a goal in the 70th minute to give the Auggies the victory.
With the win, Augsburg is now 5-0-1 overall, 2-0-0 in MIAC play, while Hamline drops to 1-2-0 overall, 0-2-0 in MIAC play.
Augsburg has yet to give up a goal this season, having now outscored its opponents by a 16-0 margin. Augsburg has now held its opponents without a goal for 575 minutes, a streak including 560 minutes in four shutouts this season and 15 minutes from its last game of last season.
"Although we are on a great streak, we understand that our results thus far are a function of our commitment to respecting our opponents and the difficulty of the game itself," said Augsburg head coach
Mike Navarre. "It's still early and we have to keep getting better in order to accomplish our objectives."
Augsburg outshot Hamline by a 28-5 margin in the game -- a 12-2 advantage in the first half and a 16-3 advantage in the second half. Augsburg also had five corner kicks, while Hamline did not have a corner kick in the game. Augsburg has now outshot its opponents by a 129-62 margin so far this season, and has had 38 corner kicks to its opponents' 11.
Maggie DeGroot (So., Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) picked up her sixth straight shutout and 14th shutout of her career in goal for the Auggies, making two saves. Samantha Winkelman (Fr., Robbinsdale, Minn./Cooper HS) made 11 saves for Hamline.
After a scoreless first half, Augsburg jumped on the scoreboard in the 47th minute and dominated possession throughout the second period. Defender
Felicia Faison (So., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) played a long-ball pass from midfield to a sprinting Anderson, who deposited the ball in the net for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
"We talked at halftime about the importance of playing positive soccer and playing with confidence," Navarre said. "In the second half I felt like we relaxed and trusted ourselves, and that was the difference tonight."
Augsburg added an insurance goal in the 70th minute, as Neuhaus notched her first goal of the season following a scramble in front of the net off an assist by
Becky Lewis (Sr., Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall HS).
Anderson had nine shots in the game for the Auggies, while Lewis had six shots. Ann Donner (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.) had two shots on goal for Hamline.
Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (9/20) at 8:30 p.m., with a nonconference game at St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn. Hamline returns to action on Sunday (9/17) at 1 p.m. with a nonconference game at Coe (Iowa).
