Women's Soccer 9/23/06 -- Augsburg 1, Carleton 0

BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS (9/23/06) -- Whitney Holman (Fr., New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) scored on a header off a corner kick in the 30th minute, the only goal the Augsburg College women's soccer team would need in a 1-0 victory over Carleton College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

Holman headed in a corner kick by Kelsey Watsabaugh (So., Eden Prairie, Minn./Hopkins HS), and the defense held firm throughout the game, as Augsburg limited Carleton to just nine shots in the game. Augsburg had 13 shots as a team.

"We knew that Carelton would be difficult to beat. They are a well-coached, organized team that plays positive soccer," said Augsburg coach Mike Navarre. "Although we did not play our best game, we worked hard, stayed organized defensively, and made Whitney's goal stand."

Augsburg is now 6-1-1 overall, 3-0-0 in MIAC play, while Carleton falls to 3-3-1 overall, 2-1-0 in MIAC play. Augsburg has now outscored its opponents by an 18-2 margin this season, and has yet to give up a goal in its three conference games this season.

Augsburg goalkeeper Maggie DeGroot (So., Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) made five saves to pick up her seventh shutout of the season and 15th of her career. DeGroot is in third place on Augsburg's all-time shutout list; Beth Petrik had 26 shutouts from 1995-98, and Laura Hoffman had 23 shutouts from 2000-03.

Yusi He (So., South Pasadena, Calif.) recorded six saves for Carleton. The Knights had a four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1) snapped.

Holman had four shots in the game for the Auggies, while Emily Anderson * (Sr., Hudson, Wis.) had five shots and Katie Medd (So., Mankato, Minn./East HS) had three shots.

Dylan Welch (Jr., San Francisco, Calif./French-American International School), Melley Turner (So., St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy HS) and Nicky Bloom (So., Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township HS) had two shots each for Carleton.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Wednesday (9/27) at 7:30 p.m. with a game at Macalester. Carleton returns to action on Monday (9/25) at 4 p.m. with a home game against Wisconsin-River Falls.

"We are looking forward to playing Macalester," Navarre said. "They have been the best program in the conference and have a phenomenal win streak at home. Although we have tied them two out of the last three years, we have not beaten them. They are the defending champions; we have a lot of respect for them and are excited for Wednesday's game."
