Augsburg falls in five games at St. Olaf

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (9/27/06) -- Christine Brook had a career-high 24 kills to lead St. Olaf College to a five-game victory -- 30-19, 30-28, 25-30, 24-30 and 15-12 -- over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match on Wednesday at Skoglund Center.

The Oles (6-8 overall, 2-3 MIAC) had won 28 in a row in the series entering the match, and the Auggies (6-9 overall, 1-5 MIAC) didn't make No. 29 easy. Augsburg fought back from a 2-0 game deficit and had a 10-7 lead in the deciding fifth game.

St. Olaf scored the last six points of the match behind the serves of Andrea Otteman, who finished with 13 kills and a team-high 20 digs in the win.

Augsburg has lost its last four matches in a row, but two went the five-game distance and the other two matches went to four games. In fact, three of Augsburg's last five matches have reached the five-game distance.

Augsburg's Dani Boner (So., Omaha, Neb./Mercy HS) and Katie LaGrave (Jr., Okinawa, Japan/Kadena HS) had 17 kills apiece in the loss. LaGrave led all players by recording a .469 attack percentage -- just two errors in 32 attempts. Boner added 11 digs for her third straight double-double and fifth in her last six matches.

Jessica Levin added 15 kills for St. Olaf, which ended a three-match MIAC losing streak in the process.

Augsburg's Julie Jenkins (So., Edina, Minn.) had 26 assists, 14 digs and four blocks (four solo), while Shanna Reed (Fr., Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels HS) collected 28 assists, five digs and two service aces. Barbara Simmons (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) had nine kills and two blocks (one solo), Haley Bower (Jr., Brainerd, Minn.) had 25 digs and Dani Tanaka (Fr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had 13 digs.

Augsburg returns to action this Saturday and Sunday (9/29-30) with matches at the Augustana (Ill.) Tournament in Rock Island, Ill. St. Olaf returns to action at Gustavus Adolphus College next Wednesday (10/4) at 7 p.m.
