Women's Soccer 9/4/06 -- Augsburg (Minn.) 2, Lewis and Clark (Ore.) 0
BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS (9/4/06) --
Becky Lewis (Sr., Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall HS) and
Emily Anderson * (Sr., Hudson, Wis.) scored first-half goals, and the Augsburg College defense held firm for its second straight shutout, as the Auggies scored a 2-0 victory over Lewis and Clark College (Ore.) in a nonconference women's soccer game Monday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Goalkeeper
Maggie DeGroot (Fr., Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) collected four saves for her second straight shutout and 10th of her career, as the Auggies improved to 2-0 on the season.
Lewis and Clark, a Northwest Conference school from Portland, Ore., is now 1-1 overall.
Augsburg scored both of its goals off of set pieces in the first half. In the eighth minute, an Augsburg corner kick went wide, but
Kristi Castelic (Fr., De Pere, Wis./West De Pere HS) recovered the ball from a Pioneer defender and found Lewis in front of an open side of the net for her second goal of the season.
In the 23rd minute, Anderson scored her second goal of the year, collecting a free kick from 25 yards out by
Kelsey Watsabaugh (So., Eden Prairie, Minn./Hopkins HS) and depositing it in the net. It's the second time the pair has connected on a goal off a long free kick this season.
"Today was another great win for our program," said Augsburg head coach
Mike Navarre. "We knew it would be difficult to beat Lewis and Clark. We were fortunate to score a few goals off of set pieces, and once again, our team defended very well collectively."
Augsburg outshot Lewis and Clark by a 16-7 margin, with Anderson registering four shots and
Angie Neuhaus (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) registering three. The Auggies controlled the flow of the game, as the defense held firm for the second game in a row to claim the shutout. Just four of the Pioneers' seven shots were on net, with DeGroot collecting each of them.
Lisa Housman (Jr., Beverly Hills, Calif.) had three shots for the Pioneers, while Katie Burnett (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif./Windward HS) had two shots. Lewis and Clark goalkeeper Nora Germano (Jr., Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) made six saves.
Augsburg returns to action on Thursday (9/7) at 7 p.m., with a nonconference game against Martin Luther (Minn.) at Edor Nelson Field. Lewis and Clark hosts Western Oregon on Friday (9/8) at 4 p.m. at Griswold Stadium.
"It's early and there are a lot of difficult challenges ahead, but we are off to a great start and playing well," Navarre said. "The team is very hungry and excited for the challenges we will face this season."
