Dani Boner (So., Omaha, Neb./Mercy HS) collected 16 kills and eight digs, and
Katie LaGrave (Jr., Okinawa, Japan/Kadena HS) had 12 kills, five blocks and two service aces, leading Augsburg College to a win in four games over visiting Bethany Lutheran College in a nonconference volleyball match Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.
After dropping the first game 30-24, Augsburg rallied back with three straight victories -- 30-23, 30-23, 30-28 -- to win the match and improve to 3-2 overall. Bethany Lutheran is now 1-4 on the season.
Boner collected six kills with five digs in the third game, and five kills in the fourth game, as the Auggies rallied from an 8-2 deficit in the third game and from a 23-21 deficit in the fourth game to claim victory.
Meanwhile, setter
Shanna Reed (Fr., Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels HS) claimed a set-dig double-double, with 22 assists and 15 digs, and
Julie Jenkins (So., Edina, Minn.) had six kills, six blocks (one solo), eight digs and two service aces.
For Bethany Lutheran, Emma Orth (So., Sun Prairie, Wis./Luther Prepatory HS) had a double-double, with 14 kills, 23 digs, three blocks and two service aces, and Joelle Shouts (Jr., Amboy, Minn./Maple River HS) had 43 assists and 11 digs. Leslie Bremer (Jr., Northrop, Minn./Martin Luther HS) had 15 kills, eight digs and seven blocks (three solo).
The Vikings jumped out to leads of 9-4, 15-8 and 24-19 in the first game, cruising to the win. Orth had four kills, while Bremer had five kills in the first game.
In the second game, Augsburg pulled away from a 10-10 tie with six of the next eight points, with Boner collecting two of her three kills in the game in that stretch, to take a lead it would not relinquish. Augsburg led by as many as nine points down the stretch.
LaGrave had four points and two blocks in the third game, with
Barbara Simmons (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) collecting three kills of her six in the match, as Augsburg scored the final seven points of the game to pull away from a 23-23 tie.
The final game was a back-and-forth struggle, with Bethany Lutheran rallying from a 28-24 deficit to tie the game at 28-28, behind five kills and nine digs in the game by Orth. But consecutive kills by
Sarah Bradley (Jr., International Falls, Minn.) on the final points of the game clinched the match for the Auggies. Bradley had seven kills, three digs and two aces in the match.
Haley Bower (Jr., Brainerd, Minn.) had 25 digs in the match, while
Tina Quick (Jr., Blaine, Minn./Centennial HS) had 14 digs.
For Bethany Lutheran, Eva Voss (So., North Mankato, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran HS) had 11 kills and three blocks, while Laura Scott (Fr., Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) had six kills and four blocks, and Nicki Flygare (So., Winthrop, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran HS) had six kills, 14 digs and two blocks (one solo).
Augsburg returns to action hosting the Augsburg Invitational on Friday and Saturday (9/8-9) at Si Melby Hall, while Bethany Lutheran returns to action on Friday and Saturday at the College of St. Catherine Tournament.
