Another shutout for the Auggies -- 8-0 over Martin Luther!

MINNEAPOLIS (9/7/06) -- Eight different players scored goals, and 14 different players figured in the scoring, as the Augsburg College women's soccer team scored its most goals in a single game since the 2002 season, in an 8-0 win over Martin Luther College in nonconference action Thursday night at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

All 20 players in uniform for the Auggies saw playing time in the contest, as the Auggies improved to 3-0 on the season. All three victories this season have been by shutout, as the Auggies have now outscored their opponents by a 13-0 margin this season. Augsburg has now held its opponents without a goal for 285 minutes, a streak including 270 minutes this season and 15 minutes from its last game of last season.

"I thought our whole team played well tonight," said Augsburg coach Mike Navarre. "We were able to play everybody and maintain a high level. That's a credit to our depth and the fact that each person is helping this program improve."

The eight goals are the most for Augsburg in a single game since the Auggies blanked Wisconsin-Superior 11-0 on Oct. 23, 2002.

Martin Luther is now 0-2 on the season, having been shut out in both its games. The Knights have been outscored 13-0 in their first two losses.

Augsburg outshot Martin Luther by a 46-4 margin in the contest, including a 27-0 advantage in the first half, as the Auggies built a 3-0 lead. Emily Anderson * (Sr., Hudson, Wis.), Becky Lewis (Sr., Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall HS) and Aili Brom-Palkowski * (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./ South HS) scored first-half goals for the Auggies.

With mostly reserves in the game in the second half, Augsburg built the lead, scoring five goals. Katie Medd (So., Mankato, Minn./East HS), Kelsey Watsabaugh (So., Eden Prairie, Minn./Hopkins HS), Carla Giuliani (Sr., Whitefish Bay, Wis./Dominican HS), Katie Edelen (Fr., Madison, Wis./Edgewood HS) and Lizzie Broin (Fr., Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS) all scored in the second half, with Edelen and Broin notching their first collegiate goals.

Edelen added two assists in the second half for a four-point night, while Watsabaugh added an assist for a three-point night. Whitney Holman (Fr., New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), Felicia Faison (So., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS), Mitra Rahimi (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.), Kelley Schreiber (So., Albert Lea, Minn.), Kristi Castelic (Fr., De Pere, Wis./West De Pere HS) and Noreen Hogan (Jr., Moline, Ill./Alleman HS) added assists for the Auggies.

Goalkeeper Maggie DeGroot (Fr., Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) collected two saves for her third straight shutout and 11th of her career. Martin Luther goalkeeper Amanda Koch (So., Downers Grove, Ill.) made eight saves.

Jenni Mueller (Sr., Livermore, Calif.) had two shots for the Knights, while Elizabeth Greenlee (Sr., Baton Rouge, La.) and Adrienne Osmus (Jr., Thornton, Colo.) also had shots.

Augsburg returns to action with a nonconference game at Wisconsin-River Falls on Saturday (9/9) at 1 p.m., while Martin Luther also returns to action on Saturday at 1 p.m., with a game at North Central (Minn.).

"Our next game against UW-River Falls will be a tough challenge," Navarre said. "They are a well-coached team that plays hard and they're difficult to beat at home. We know it will be an intense game, and we look forward to it."
